I meant to talk to you about Schutzhund...do you train other breeds besides pitties?

I've been pit bull exclusive (except for Tuffie the Patterdale terrier!) for about 20 years now. However, before that I owned and adored Dobermans. However, in my dog-filled life I have trained Rotties, German shepherds, Malinois, cane corso, etc,etc... and as a club decoy I've worked just about everything that looks through a collar. Schutzhund has been my obsession for nearly 35 years now, but just the past few months I have found I am having to give it up - too much for my physically. Just finishing up my current SchH II dog to his III and FH and then done... (sob!) I LOVE it! That is why I am getting into chicken showing... sitting ina chair all day - that I can do!

To the person who asked the price of entering, this was my first show so no expert, but it was $3 per bird. Yes, I will be going to Stevenson - absolutely!!!

Probably leave Rodger home, but will bring Agincourt the American game and maybe some OEGs (LF).
Note: Not ALL sick birds were removed... I'm no chicken expert, but I do believe that one of the sickest birds I saw there won his variety... : ( And I noticed that one poor person I nabbed to ask about the judges comments on the cards (REALLY h ard to read! as I am trying to learn this game) anyway this person was a VETERINARIAN. So, seems like there was a vet there for free? Anyway, I sure wish they would check birds for OBVIOUS signs of illness... did make me kinda freaky to put my birds back in the yard...​

They are the size of bumblebees when hatched. Very fragile and bounce around like popcorn. we call em "Poppits"

This is "Ali" a male with attitude! He's a riot when we do anything in his pen. He dances around your hand, flaps his wings and puffs up to look big. He pecks but it does not hurt at all and I'd rather they be feisty then flighty.
He changed colors so much that I have a series of shots just of him.

Big winds today...blew over the goat shelter -- one of those tarp carports from Costco, it'd been in place for two years, all staked down and has been thru much worse wind than what today was. Must have been just a freak gust. It blew it up onto the house, over the chicken yard fence and into the garden fence. wreaking havoc all along the way. It was an ordeal to get it all cleaned up and something put back together for the goatie girls to sleep in. *whew*

I love the pictures from the show guys! Fun time.

I agree--sick birds should stay home. I left one of my cochins in quarantine AT HOME because she had some cold thing going on. I also want to point out that if one of your flock dies unexpectedly, and you are raising breeding showing selling--get the bird necropsied by WADDL--it doesn't cost a lot, and it keeps EVERYONE's flock safe.....

and we DO have a vet who shows rather frequently....
just sayin'

The vet is a canine reproduction specialist, and she was there showing. It's hard to vet everyone's bird yet get your birds in, cleaned, pampered, and groomed for show.

She does know alot, but again, if a show expects a vet to work the show, the vet needs to be there to work the show. It wouldn't be fair to Cindy to ask her to show her birds AND act as veterinary policeman on every bird brought in the building.
May I ask what bird you thought was sick that won the class?

I also left birds at home because I found some mites. I agree with Jen on getting birds necropsied when indicated.

I'm sorry if some feel I am being critical, but it's so easy to sit and criticize when you aren't the one trying to put the whole thing together. I wasn't involved in putting it together, but I know the show committee works very hard to try to make the show a good day for everyone, and it seems there are never enough hands available to help arrange, organize, set up, and tear down a show. Frankly, unless I want to take it on myself I am going to be grateful for the few shows within driving distance still going on, and hope for the return of some shows that have gone the way of the dodo within the last decade (ie the Kennewick, WA show at Benton County fairgrounds).

There are things you can do to help prevent the spread of disease- if you see obvious signs of disease (foamy eye, runny nose, etc) feel free to inform someone at the show table, make sure your birds are strong and healthy before transport (do remember the stress of transport and showing can cause problems even without bugs), treat your birds when they get home for mites and bugs, and QUARANTINE QUARANTINE QUARANTINE.

While the loss of my show birds would not be pleasant (due to disease, theft, accident, etc etc etc) , I could keep on keeping on with my favorite breesd and colors without them.

Also plan on specializing in avians (I love my parrots).
