anything with processed corn that we eat is most likely GMO but it doesn't have to be labled as such because of something something exempt something.

in corn and other crops now they have gotten corn to metabolise the compound Bt. bacterium thurngenesis (sp) and it causes the insect feeding on the plant to become sick and slowly die.

normally i do not site wiki anymore but in terms of science it is actually accurate and an aggregate of many scholarly articles and i figured no one wants to read a scientists report. but this covers the concept of Bt well

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgenic_maize

in the us certain grains do not have to be labled GMO even though they are transgenic.

does your frosted flakes say made with gmo corn? or gmo soy?
many products actually label "made without gmo corn" but it is a commonly accepted fact that many vegetables in the market are gmo in some way.

knowing all this might cause people to become more firm in homegrown produce or it might make people freaked out.
at the same time it is good to know what you are putting in your mouth... and essentially the consumer should become more aware about what they eat (i am most likely preaching to the crior here, but mentioning this as a principle)

people are slowly becoming more aware about how chickens are raised and because of the salmonella scare with eggs people are now raising their own flock as a personal form of 'biosecurity of food'

GMO are bad in other ways too, pesticide resistant weeds aka superweeds have popped up recently. My buddy explained some trees that had been genetically modified and the unwinding of possible effects that are untested. The biggest issue people have and I have with GMO stuff is there isnt any testing and it is going like wildfire. Sure scientists who are backed by big ag say its safe. Does it really produce any more food, or dies it produce more profit for the big ag companies who wrangle teh rights of the farmers away through legal matters. To me this is one of the biggest things going against gmo stuff for me. The way that farmers cannot save seed, that the patented seeds are blown around and the farmers are sued for havinng an unwanted crop invade thier livelihood. Just because someone can do something doesnt mean that they should. GMO stuff isnt labeled because big ag has enough money to not have it labeled. Subsidies makes food cheap, and for that we have corn and soybean in every packaged food just about that there is. Those are th etwo biggest crops GE grown. Soy isnt fermented like in asia but its roasted to detoxify the beans. Soybean meal has questionable health risks, and soymilk has estrogen mimicks that can make men and women alike have hormonal issues. It seems like big ag isnt trying to feed everyone, just dominate the market, and taht I dont want anything to do with. If I wasnt to support corporate I can do that, but I dont, so I support my local farmers who have the same ideals about humanity that I do.

I dont know of anything that has to be labeled GMO. In fact they said that it was against their first amendment rights (big ag) to have another company say that their product wasnt gmo, because saying their product wasnt gmo made the GMO look like an inferior product (dont ask me how that worked, I read it online). This is good strategy. I guess from that standpoint anythign ive ever read or heard in my entire life is just hearsay, from books and stuff like that, or a tangeant abstract thought maybe? Are they selling beans or pondering quasars and what not? Sounds more like philosophy than selling a product.

things grown organic are often labeled "no gmo" because they can label it legally and not have the big companies. (i think, haven't heard of any organic products sued because of it)

USDA Organic certified has to not have any GMO in it... the big ag companies could argue that is is redundant to label it "no gmo" because the consumer should already know that because it is organic it already doesn't have it.... but i am not a lawyer... sometimes i wish i was but sometimes its amusing to just sit and watch technicalities fly around.

then again i have found that the consumer has their own ideals of what organic is and they think their ideals are in line with the legal definitions.... which often (in my experience) they are not. personally i find that a tree planted and just watered and to fend for itself falls under the neglected or abandoned 'definition' (and the fruit quality is none...) in my area if there are fruit trees "left with just water and no treatment" the county or state can come in if tested positive for pests or disease, and either treat the crop or remove it, either way the owner will see a bill for the abandoned field/ orchard.

My BCM has laid only one egg, and that was the day after we brought her home. I too was thinking there may be something wrong, but she is behaving perfectly normal and does not seem to be in any distress. I felt just in case, not that I would know what to check for. she didn't feel any different than my other birds. Maybe it is just transplant shock, or maybe the breed are not reliable layers. The Sussex is laying fine. The Bantam Cochin has not laid an egg yet, but she and her roo are content with a new coop and a 10' X 10' covered run all to themselves. None of the birds appear to be in any distress to my untrained eye.

My BCM is not being picked on by the others (the Sussex is). The BCM was acceptesd fine into my flock and hangs out with them. She is not as good with people and runs from DD and I when we reach to them, where my hens run up and squat, and the Sussex follows me like a dog, but does not do the squat thing. The banties look to see what goodies we bear, and then decide if they will allow themselves to be pet or picked up.

I am trying again on the Brabanter eggs. Let's hope they do better this time. I'm also getting more appenzeller spitzhauben eggs since Rainwolf said the last batch don't look to be doing much. I want a t least a quad or trio of each.

I ordered a batch of Spritzers too to cover these since they look to be mostly air sack problems... it looks like someone shook the packages..

I'm going to video a candling to show what I mean.
I've never had such bad luck with eggs! even the serama eggs at least 2 hatched healthy out of 17 eggs.
3 different incubators all batches with a few of my eggs added to use for controls so we know its not the incubators..

Well, if you've ordered them, I won't. I'll reimburse you. Are any of the original order going to hatch?

Ok, I'm going horizontal for a few. I am really weak & tired. I have not eaten since 5pm on Tuesday. I can not have food till Friday morning. It's hard to sleep when the dumb docs make you start drinking the nasty stuff at night!

Ok night shift..... it's 3:12am...... I have 12 hours till the big "C"............ I'm handing the controls over........
