pretty dang close! ours came from pretty much the same breeders, bamachicken and the UOC secretary. her splash boy is 75% english import so you should get some nice big fluffy birds. the ones I just hatched are same eggs you got. post pics when they hatch!! when is that anyway? should be soon?

How does one train a dog to be around chickens. I have a boxer.

Oh that will be quite the challenge, boxers LOVE to chase things.
Bird dog do not really love to chase but more like to retrieve, and watch things.
Out of all my many many bird dogs, none had a hard mouth, none chased birds, all lived with chickens.
The boxer however never stopped chasing our chickens.

He has seen them through the slider and smelled them while I was holding them. We will be putting brick or concrete around the base of their pen.

Can ducks and chickens live together? I keep pondering the idea of ducks, they're so darn cute! But I just wonder how they would do with my chickens? Also if chickens are carriers of bugs that can kill the ducks. Like I know you can't keep chickens and turkeys together because of the blackhead illness.

I wanna duckie so bad though

hahaha

Sure...why not? You just need to give everyone non-medicated chicken feed and give the ducks a tub of water to bath in. They take daily baths.
My ducks do not perch, so they need a nest at floor level. They also don't eat that much feed as they forage for slugs & crawlies. Love dandelions. I actually have to go out of my place to "harvest" dandelions for them today.
Wonder what will happen if one stuck a duckling under a broody hen??

I might have to haggle for some ducky eggs next week then

she should take the eggs, however I'm not sure they'll be viable after being kept in the fridge? I have heard some say that after being in a fridge they will not hatch> Ive never tried myself so have no practical experience

Eggs will hatch that are up to 3 weeks old but not as likely as ones that are day old. Also eggs that do not freeze, and preferably no lower than 40 degrees, are actually more fertile than those that are kept at room temperature from what I was told and read from several sources.

I might have to haggle for some ducky eggs next week then

Good luck with the duck eggs.

Congrats!!!!!! I never had any kids and I think those who do (and do a good job raising them) are simply awesome. Toughest job in the world when done right.

Hey you guys, did you see the huge F-up Pasado's did this AM? (As usual! I have a long history with these idiots and believe me they are NO GOOD!)

Evidently someone (and animal expert, mind you) has never seen hunter dumps. So they see what is evidently three dead skinned coyotes on the side of the road (I DO HATE hunters that dump dead animals out in public like that). Anyway, I woke up to BREAKING NEWS on KOMO about "three hideously disfigured dogs DISPLAYED on the side of a road" by some "obvious sick individual". SO PAsado's goes off half cocked,as usual, and grabs this "evidence of a crime" while bleating they will pay $5000 to anyone who can help them solve "the crime" that they, by the way, just ruined the site of for investigation by REAL officers. Get all the little old ladies hysterial and reaching for their check books to make a donation....

Then the sheriff comes on the radio and says "these are more likely than not coyotes which have been skinned, as hunters do cut the head and feet off them to skin them". Last I heard Pasado would not return phone calls and wouldn't hand over the "evidence" to the sheriffs....

This is what is so sad: the so called "experts" these days are young kids, clueless, and running off at the mouth about these sick things they imagine, and I think we will be darn LUCKY to get off without some teenage kid seeing HOW MUCH ATTENTION THIS GOT and doing a "copycat" thing with REAL domestic animals.... So much of the crap humane societies say become self fulfilling prophecies when dumb kids read their stuff.

How do I know? Over 20 years as a professional animal control officer, also consultant to animal control in five countries. As well, myself and two others worked very hard to save 50 dogs that Pasado dumped on a hoarder (who was promptly busted for animal abuse and shut down when we got authorities there) in Arkansas during the "Katrina" debacle, because they wanted to get their pictures in the papers with their PASADA t-shirts on, but h um, didn't want to have to deal with the not-so-cute and adoptable dogs they "saved". They left 50 dgos sitting in the rain in wire cages at this gross facility with over 300 dogs on it (no running water) and 2 people....

Anyway, I'm sorry to rant, but NOTHING T's me off like "animal lovers" who aren't.

I do not know who PASADO is....or what it stands for, but I think I remember hearing about the incident of dumping the dogs off at a "rescue" and she was a hoarder. We have a rescue organization over here....that I would not send my worst enemy too....I think they are ACTUALLY letting cats and dogs breed so they can sell the babies off as "rescues". That is only my opinion (as well as a few others) and this is all it is .... my opinion. Very sad.

Welcome

What kind of Chickens are you looking for meat or eggs, or if you have kids 4-H. How much room do you have for them is also a good question..
This is a great thread and we can all help you out. We also have lots of birds to choose from on this thread..

Hi Zgoatlady,

I'm looking for pets that are also egg-layers (flock size of 3-4). My main concerns are personality and the care/space demands of the hens. I would like easy going, friendly, low-maintenance, hardy birds who don't mind being handled and are OK with being cooped up in their house on rainy days (basically all winter and much of spring). Egg size, color, and production rate isn't a big concern for me.

My coop is about 4W x 5L x 8H, utilizes the vertical space well, has about 6.5 ft of available roosts, and has two 12in x 12in x 14in nesting boxes. Attached to the coop is a secure 4W x 5L x 5H run with a 4 ft long roost and partial roof for shade/rain coverage. They will have access to the run at all times and be allowed to free-range in my back yard when it's not too wet. The size of the hen door from the coop to the run may be a problem; at 12in x 11in, it may be too small to accommodate the larger breeds.

Thanks for your advice!

I know that there are many birds who will fit this "bill"...but I do love my BR (barred rocks). They are very friendly and personable. I open my back door....they all come running. They lay nice big eggs. There is probably a lot more I don't know that others can help you with....but I love my BR bitties (I call them this just because). Mine are all hand fed treats. I can pick them up and love them. They are nice girls.

I am SO NOT a pro....but, my Hannah, just hatched 2 BR eggs (she is a bantam cochin)...24 hours later I had bought 3 feed store chicks and I put them under her in the middle of the night. Now, mind you...the babies she hatched are black....the 3 I put under her - yellow. If you were to ask her....they are all her babies and she fluffs up about twice her size whenever I am out there cleaning/feeding/watering. Those are HER babies....no questions asked. Mine did not notice that not only did she gain 3 babies 24 hours later (and I had moved her from where she had been to a more secure location - away from everyone else) but that NONE of the eggs were bantam cochin size. My personal opinion...once they are broody - they kind of go brain-dead. I bet she won't notice....but will eagerly await the opinions of pros.
