I don't know about it's gender, but it's looking like it's having a bad hair day.

I read something on the national Silkie web site, that it is very difficult to tell what gender a Silkie is until the bird either lays an egg, or crows. I don't know if that is completely true, because I know that there are those that seem to be able to tell much earlier than that.

you sneaky girl!!!!!!!!!

Your are on. I can't wait to get them apricots. I also love canned pears and peaches. I am going to need to find a gasket for my pressure canner this year.

I'm hopping in the car with you!

I have a big pressure canner, no gasket. I have 6 or 8 thinga-ma-bobs that have to be screwed down to lock the lid in place. I've got a giant kitchen and we can have a canning party! (or even a gianter kitchen if we borrow the one at the Sallal Grange in North Bend).

I tried using non medicated ONCE and lost two 10 week old chicks to cocci in no time flat. I will NEVER feed unmedicated again. We have way too much cocci in the ground around here because it is so wet.

Thanks! I have about 70lb of unmedicated left ... should I mix it with medicated or add something to their water? I don't want to lose any chicks.

I use the medicated feed for the first 2 weeks. I have read that the chicks are the most vulnerable during those fist couple of weeks. After that then I am feeding the grower feed from Scott's. I am a little concerned that the protein is not high enough in the grower feed. It says that it is 16%. The feed that I have gotten at Del's in the past is 24% protein.

I picked up 5 more meat birds today. I now have 15 meaties. I know that we can get that many processed in an afternoon.

After paying $12 for 1.5 lbs. of organic chicken breasts at QFC today, I think I will be doing freezer camp with my extra roos. (I still have pet ones available to those who won't eat them). Anyone going to have a butchering party and don't mind one very squeemish helper who will likely get in the way more than anything else? I used to dissect lots of stuff for work, and it didn't bother me at the time. I have turned soft, and the thought of killing the sweet guys now makes me feel like barfing.

This is getting to sound like more and more fun. Yeah!!!

I don't know what I would do in that situation - that's a lot of feed, and the amount of amprolium in the medicated feed is so low, I would think that if you mixed the two it would make the amount of amprolium near negligable...

Anyone else have thoughts on this? I would say that if your chicks are NOT on the ground, the unmedicated would be ok until they went outside and had access to the ground. That's what got my babies - being on the ground. Once you put them outside, switch them to the medicated until they are old enough for a general purpose feed or layer, however you do it at your house.

Well if we do the canning at your house, then we can do the freezer camp at mine. I need to do the actual kill this year. I haven't done that part yet. But with the kill cone (aka a used traffic cone) and a pair of sharp pruning shears, I am going to have to do the deed. Anyone that wants to watch or would like to bring some of their own birds to process, please feel free to come. At this point it looks like we are going to have the freezer camp school on either May 28th, or June 5th. If we want we could do a potluck for lunch.
