Ironically I got a call yesterday from Dr. Howard asking to come out this week and pick up some eggs to take back for AI testing. The Dept. of Ag used to pay me $10 a dozen to come out once a Quarter and test for AI. I never did it, but if I remember right, they'd pay $5 per bird to swab your birds for AI. They also used to do NPIP Certification relatively inexpensively too.

Now they want to come out and test your birds for free - unless you happen to sell your eggs which I do at which time I am actually paying the State to test my birds. They have also made NPIP testing pretty much cost prohibitive for most of us. The State now charges you $80/hr and the clock starts from the time the Vet gets in his car until he arrives back at the office. The Vet is in Olympia and that's 3-4 hours from me. So consider 6-8 hours and then another 2 hours or so to test the birds (he said it's 2-3 minutes per bird plus 30 minutes on each side for prep and cleanup) and you're looking at about 8-10 hours at $80/hr each year just to get NPIP certified. Care to take a guess how many chicks I would have to sell and ship before I would even break even?

And here's the real kicker, all this just so you can help the State continue to receive Federal funding for AI and NPIP. That's right, the Federal Gov't - you and my tax dollars - already give the State funding for the AI and NPIP programs. Should an outbreak of PT occur, the State loses that funding. So, one would THINK that the State would be encouraging participation in the program and not discouraging it by making it so cost prohibitive. The only folks this hurts are the backyard flock owners because the big commercial poultry farms have no choice but to participate.

Having said all that, yes Julie Broome and Dr. Badcoe are very nice people, friendly, and very willing to help. Truth be told, I don't think they like what's going on either but they just have to do what the Legislature has forced upon them and us. My advice is to let both of them know and your Legislature that this new law they passed this year is completely unfair, bogus, and harmful to the State because it discourages participation rather than encouraging it. Unfortunately, it is often the squeaky wheel that gets the grease and I think the best thing that can happen is if the State sees a complete loss of participation in these two programs. Then they can go back to the Legislature and point to the specific cause being this new Law. Once the State realizes that they can very well lose all that Federal money with just one instance of PT and that the risk is multiplied expotentially by every person who fails to participate, then maybe they will revoke this law and make it worth our while again participate.

Btw, for those who've seen my place, they know I've got two ponds on the property. Every winter I get migratory wild ducks coming through and spending some time on the pond with my other ducks. This is exactly why the State initially was paying me to allow them to test my birds. I'm also up north and those birds are flying south. So how much does the State really care about keeping tabs on AI in this State or in this country?

God Bless,

Yeah....I almost passed out when I asked for a quote for them to travel to Okanogan.

Got to meet Paraclete 2 in Ferndale today - happy, talkative, passionate guy utterly devoted to his chickens. His seramas were gorgeous! Provided a desperately sought companion chicken. Foul people are the best!

My green egg layers have gone on strike since it got warmer and I put a heater in the chicken house. 5 brown eggs so far today. I have also added a light to the outside part of the coop so they stay up a bit later. Thankfully the later hours have helped in the crowing department. He no longer starts at 4:30, now it is about 6 or 6:30 Yay!!!

Eagle and KMHunter. Chicks have arrived safe and sound. They were a little hot and parched when they arrived, so I was worried. But now they are active and jumping out of the box! Thats pretty good for their age. Hearty chicks!!!

Which of the little chickies is Gizmo Kim? I plan on calling him that also. You can pass that on to your son. I had a cat that I loved dearly who was named Gizmo. (Lost custody in a break-up) So it made me happy to hear that is what your guy had called him. I will try very hard to get him a very nice home, when the time comes.

OK.... I need help. The black ones are the BC Marens, and the others are the Barnevelders. Looks like There are 4 Roos to me. So is the lighter color guy what you are trying to weed out Eagle? There is one little girl who is very dark and has some brown.... She is my fave so far!

I will post pics in the next couple of days. Must get batteries. My rechargeable aren't anymore. I hate that! Spend all that money, and they quit charging much faster than they are supposed too

I am so glad they made it safely. The one he named Gizmo is the Barnevelder that has the lightest coloring on the sides and the darkest stripe down it's back. Very Mellow.

I hope you all read the other thread for the party. I need your votes on the date. Then I am renting the place in Kirkland. That way we can get to the fun stuff!

I didn't have time to let my girls roam today. I hope nobody turns me in to DSHS. I worked three hours OT today then got home and had to read five pages of party posts to see if I was still invited to the party! then a quick nap, then off to see the Doctor. By the time I got home it was dark

and the girls were in the coop.
I'm having trouble figuring out my girls. but then come to think of it I can't figure out my wife either. Must be a Female thing.

This morning my daughter went out and got 5 eggs. at 3:00pm I went out and got 3 more. so my girls went 8 for 8. BUT at 5:00pm I went out and one of my leghorns was sitting over TWO rubber (no shell) eggs they were together touching each other. Could she have laid an egg this morning and then two rubber ones at 5:00 ??? when I went to grab them she started to eat one. I got almost all of them away from her
Any idea's from you experts? they are getting lots of oyster shell

The black ones are the Marans that do not make my standards. No feathering on the legs and feet and also have yellow on the legs and feet. This a poor quality for selling.
The lighter colored ones are the Barnevelders that have some white gene that I do not want in my flock and do not wish to sell. I am trying to get rid of this. A.S.A.P

I have voted!

Wow that's pretty strange alright.
All of my experience is when a hen lays her second egg for the day (which is like once a year or even two years) the second egg will be like a water balloon. But three in the same day? Never heard of it.
Another thing is to have two soft with oyster shells in the same day? Very curious?
Mike

wish I could help more?

Just wanted to say hi to my fellow Washingtonian chicken lovers. I reside in the far northwest just five miles south of the canadian border. Town of Ferndale, I raise b/c marans, seramas, cuckoos, and about seventy layers for eggs, and I also sell pullets to those who can't raise their own babies. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can and A special invitation to Anne of Maple falls as that is quite close to my wife and I.

OMG: You talk about dedication: I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Suburban Chick from Bothell today. What a great gal, and does she ever fit the mold of crazy chicken people...LOL.

Just think about it she drove approx two hundred and forty miles today just to pick up one baby chick. Now thats dedication. What a great gal and what a blast to meet her. I would love to attend the party, but due to sight problems I can't drive to far. So If I cannot attend I would like to donate fifty bucks to attend in my place to be used for the hall rental. Just tell me where to send it. Paraclete 2

These little new guys and girls are so cute. I know there are 2 kinds of chickens in the box, but it looks like I have 3 of one kind, 2 of another kind, and 3 others who don't look like anybody. I can see what you mean about them on complying with the rules of what they should be..... But that said, I am not very compliant either, so they suit me just fine. I just love a few of them so much. I will have some trouble choosing who to keep for my two.

I am using larger legs and feet, and more comb and wattles to try to sex them.

I think I have 2 copper marans girls, but not sure because they look completely different. One is all Black with some feathering on the feet (like the two males). The other is Black with dk brown partridge like markings on her feathers, dark legs and feet, no feathering on the legs.

Then the Barnevelders.... 2 of them are the same dark brown with lighter and darker markings. But one looks like a boy and one a girl. Then the other one is much lighter, and is hard to tell if boy or girl.

Can you clue me in Mike. Is there a way to tell at this point who is male or female?
