I wish I could sign on to that train but the chicken coop project has slowed to a stop and I'm not going to be ready for more chickens by Saturday. I need two something hens, and Cochins are looking better and better despite my aversion for feather feet.

I have lemon blue cochins (LF) in my incubator on a fertility test.

They are so adorable!!
Sweet and Calm, shy and gentle.
If they hatch, I will give you a buzz.

I have a huge Lt Sussex from Heather - she is my most friendly, docile bird. We named her Luna. She thinks she is a lap-chicken; follows me around everywhere, and if I sit on the porch, she will plop down right next to me! She is also a very good layer and not nearly as noisy as some of my other hens. All of my hens are friendly, but this one most of all. She likes to be picked up and carried around, which makes her the target of affection for visiting kids. Surprisingly, she's not very high in the pecking order. She never defended herself from the other hens when I brought her in to the flock. It was the birds at the bottom of the pecking order that gave her a hard time, but they are all fine now. She's funny. She has a specific nesting box that she insists on using. The box is plenty big for 2 large hens, but she insists on being against the back wall. There is a broody EE in there now (her former enemy #1), and when I watched Luna yesterday, and she just climbs on top of the broody to lay her egg!

The girls all started sewing before they went to school (I learned embroidery starting at four or so myself) and quilting was a social activity with the others of the Children's Orthopedic Guild (Children's in Seattle started as a polio hospital, and the quilts were first for the beds and later for sale for fundraisers). She was too busy to piece quilt tops but would cut scraps to a pattern and then pass them on to folks with fewer kids and cows.

She also grew roses and kept a pretty flower garden for the good of her soul. Nice Quaker lady, was Grandma Jane. Unfortunately I inherited some of the neurology of the other side of the family, rather like a dog we had who was half beagle and half blue heeler: he was all "cow, cow, cow, cow, ooooo RABBIT" to work with...

What is up with all this applesauce? I thought it was supposed to be 50 and sunny today! Woke up at 6 to an inch of white fluffy applesauce on the ground and more falling from the sky!. At 6:30 was waiting at the bus stop with DS when a heavy rain squal came and melted all the snow. 8:30 back out again with DD at the bus stop, freezing cold high winds and more applesauce! It has melted again for the moment.

I'm looking for something like that, with a side order of broody and not prone to flight for the west yard with Ian and Sylvia; the Hamburgs are going on the northeast side, and I suspect I'll need a tall net roof to keep them out of the oak trees (which, to appreciate the joke, begin branching about 20 feet off the ground).

Well, DD and DH are off to work, and won't be home until 8pm or so; they don't have a long commute, just long hours. I need to get up and dressed and out to chickens and cows and roses and carpentry: springtime calls with all its utter unreliability.
