I spotted a varied thrush in the back yard today too -- must be going to be spring soon, as they are migrating through ...
chicks seemed very interested in its song ...
they were jumping so high today, they almost popped the hatch in the run roof, open ! I need to figure out how to secure it so they can't
Dierdre-chick flew right up onto the hatch surround when I was putting the fresh feed down in the run --- she is SO SOFT -- so I just bumped her back in where she belonged ...
goofy Moonlight was trying to dust-bathe in WET soil today ... ignored the corner with the nice dry sand, dug into the damp soil in the other corner instead -- where Ginger had been digging after worms ... she's a whiz at that
spotted some more hardware cloth tossed down over the river embankment -- will go retrieve that though it will be interesting since blackberry sprouts have grown up through and around it ...
laid out the run today, looks like the chickens will get the interior 8 x 10-1/2 area ... with 18 inch wide flower boxes all around -- I was going to make it slightly bigger but that would close off a path that we all use ... and I'm not sure I have enough fence wire for that larger perimeter AND the overhead as well
now if I can salvage and take apart enough pallets to line the lower foot of the inner perimeter, it will be really nice for chicks (I would paint the pallet-surplus boards -- the ore troughs' paint on the lower bit is flaky -- don't want chicks pecking it)
