Would have happened if it were under the mama, right?

Yep

I'm fed up with having the poor chickens stuck in the chicken tractor; I may take some of my limited energy and make an exit gate for them instead of trying to finish wiring up the run by myself. The only problem is that I'll have to buy more hinges if I do; the coop will have a chicken-exit and at least one drop- panel for cleaning.

I got a little random stuff accomplished today; moving the chicken tractor up hill lengthwise used up most of my energy, but at least I remembered to fill the suet feeders so the chickadees stopped mobbing me and figured out how I'll have six feet of wire on what's now a four foot post wired into the orchard fence. I'm going to have to put the hardware cloth on the inside of the run for this stuff to work, oh well.

Was looking at bird netting prices today in service of the future banty pen: my goodness is the varmint-proof stuff expensive! I don't have to worry about netting my cherry tree (Lapin, self-fruitful) this year because it got hit by a sleet-storm when in full bloom.

How do your free-range chickens react to clothes hung out to dry? I've had puppies and kittens both attack laundry the first time they saw it flapping in the wind, and calves spook away from the fence when the wind changed and flapped sheets their way; do chickens get bothered at all?

I wonder. I do not have access to ferret poo...would cat poo work? But cat poo can stink, but so does ferret poo. We used to have a ferret. His name was Frank and he was the sweetest thing.

What on earth ????

If you want to chase off predators, use dog doo.
You can shovel it in a bucket & "sprinkle " it all around your "yard"
Ferrets ?
I would think it would attract bigger predators ?

Well, I do have 5 dogs...but will the poo keep the mice away? Are dogs predators for mice to worry about? Actually I caught 4 in sticky traps last night and the chickens at them off the sticky traps. Sheesh....monsters

Yep

Occasionally, their "belly button" does not "suck inward and seal" and they bleed.
If I am around at the time, and see it, I have a Q-tip with vaseline on it, grab the chcik quickly & while twirling, gently push the outward poking belly button back in the gut.
Then put the chick back.
Under the broody hen, this baby would have died.

Confession is good for the soul isn't it?

Yes, it was cleansing......
Um, Ms. SadieSue.....are you needing to confess anything. Any early peaking? Hmmmmmm?

Haha, not anymore! I had already confessed to attempt candling on day 5. It was very exciting, but I promised to not peek again til either the 2 week mark or lockdown. So far so good. Although it is easier to leave the eggs alone when I'm 250 miles away from them like I am now. Did you and DD take a look together yet?

Some dogs develop a taste for mice; one of my sister's German Shorthaired Pointers spent hours every day hunting in the hay barn and catching mice.

Mine don't take any notice of it. My puppy has ripped clothes off the line, but the hens could care less.

I just watched a slide show of some of the wedding photos. What's up with those awful hats? Looks like some of the royals had their hatmakers go down to the local dollar store for applesauce to stick on their heads! Looked like they were competing for ugliest headwear.
