LOL...In all actuality...I feed song birds in my back yard and I am throwing out some chick starter for them to fight over, to maybe help combat any Cocci they may have in their system. My cat (has since lost) but usually wears a bell on a collar to warn the birds. But occasionaly a person needs to spout death threats at something (bird in this iinstance) because they are frustrated with the damage they are doing. I don't care what the RCWs are because I have no intention of killing them....just needed to spout my frustration at them and stick needles in my little birdie voodoo dolls. Actually, I think I have finches for the most part. Are starlings considered song birds? They have a bounty over here on them. I am glad though that some one else is also familiar with the 3 S system. We, unfortunately, have been forced to do this with some meandering dogs over the years. Honestly, we usually use light bird shot and hit them in the rear end so they go home. They have only been a few deaths by us on neighbor dogs....and that was when they anialated an entire flock 10+ years ago and stood their ground (uncornered) when DH confronted them. That 1 shot killed 4 dogs and a galvanized stock tank. Hmmmm, we still have that stock tank, I could put babies in it.
ep.gif
I gotta go and dig that tank out of my mother's barn.

Bye ya' all. I hope I have not offended to many....this is just how my brain works and is my opinion. Hope you all have a nice day.

Really ya gotta do what ya gotta do right? It's a shame people don't have sense enough to keep their dogs in their own yards, even in the country! There is no excuse for loose dogs, if people really loved their animals they would want to keep them in their yards!!! I don't let my dog run, and I never have, if I'm not out with her she's with me . Is as much to keep the animal safe as it is to keep other animals safe from them! I guess I just believe in defending property, livestock and pets included, if there is a threat to home and animals it's our right to defend it! I guess if the people who owned the dogs cared about them they wouldn't have been on your land attacking your flock!!! Ok, just my Good old American opinion!! Right to defend!!

What drives me crazy

is when people walk their dogs by our house ( my dogs in a fenced yard, and we all live on land) and stop 1 let their dogs bark at my dogs in the fenced yard 2 let the dogs take a big crap by my car so when I got to work in the am and cant see I steep in it
somad.gif
, 3 than yes let their dogs run all over and kill. Thats why I have a GP in my goat and chicken pasture.
You know you can make people pay for your animals that die. I know it doesnt bring them back. Had a friend have a dog attack and the people had to pay all vet bills. Know of someone who lost goats the the people had to pay BIG TIME for the goats and the goats that the goats would have had, the whole thing...

I don't allow target practice on small birds either, what we said was (somewhat) in jest. There is also the law to protect your livestock and property. Shoot, shovel, shut up.

I know it was in Jest

SSS is a useful tool when it comes to the rest of the pests. last week there was a golden retriever here and he chased my birds, when I went and chased him off he snarled at me.... if he comes over again he wont be going home. I did follow him and found his owner who immediately said, oh it wasnt him there is another that looks just like him.
barnie.gif
I told her I just followed him here it was him! oh well he was probably just playing, he isnt mean...
smack.gif
I just let her know what he was up to, did not tell her he would not be home should he visit again. I have two new foals out there along with a small mini mule and he is not welcome.
the songbird thing, I only know this cause one morning we were shopping at the top foods in Lynnwood, at 2 am lol and all of the sudden 4 people came walking up to the front door with rifles. My DH is a sheriff so that got his attention fast. they all had their hands up quick and when lynnwood pd arrived for back up we found out they were their to shoot the tweety birds with pellet guns (not at the request of top foods) that would go in and out of the stores big open front doors. AT 2 AM!!!!! they thought it great sport to shoot the little birds stuck in the rafters of the store. not really fair if you ask me. anyway they were all cited and told to go home.

Oh, bother. I had a juvenile female sharpshin sitting on the shrub between me and the suet feeder right now, and fumbled getting a camera. Drat. Drat both ways: lost photo, and maybe bird netting isn't so expensive after all?

I have neighbors across the lower pasture who have (1) a daycare, where the new kids always think it's hilarous to moo at my cattle and set them off making a racket. (2) A pair of Boxers who are kept separate from the daycare kids and bark all the time and (3) Parties with live amplified music to which they do not invite their neighbors. Oh, and also (4) Screaming marital arguments at 3am, on the back porch facing my bedroom windo.

Some days I don't like humans.

Which is the rule we follow for stray dogs (when we can get to them), cougars, bears, and coyotes. Unfortunately getting a clear shot that doesn't endanger the neighbors has gotten to be pretty tricky; good thing the cougars usually keep on going until they hit the heavily wooded large-lot subdivision over by Long Lake.

The song birds (actually migratory birds) thing is actually a federal law in service to an international treaty, and is, for the most part, enforced against people who are trafficking in feathers and eggs, and secondarily as a tool in planning large structures to avoid migration corridors. Even cats (which the Audubon Society believes kill millions of small birds a year) are far behind cars and skyscrapers in the annual death of small flying things.

On the other hand, I just about died of fright about ten minutes ago when the big dumb RSL rooster (who I call Gonzo in absence of any actual official name) snuck up behind me and crowed while I was concentrating on getting a good photo of a newly blooming apple tree glowing in the morning sun.

as I recall, you may shoot nuisance birds "in the act of depredation" -- the rondy joke was,
Q= how do you tell when a crow is in the act of depredation?
A= when he turns black ...
gig.gif

starlings are not considered song birds
neither are crows .. but you need to make sure it is a crow and not a raven
"English" or house sparrows are not song birds ... but song sparrows are

we used to call the house finches "purple humming finches" -- because they would flap like mad and bump the hummingbird feeders, then lick up the drops that splattered

well it was an older mare and the owners were away for the weekend. the blanket she had on came undone and wrapped in her front legs...in about 2 feet of mud so she was trapped, would not have been good had I not seen her from the road. shoes wash I guess. she is ok now, trotted off after she got out of the mud... not so much as a thank you as she waved her tail at me...lol

hope your son is ok!

Gosh, I have had to this multiple times over the years. Once was a cow stuck in the mud and had to use a tractor and horses to pull her out. Had a horse get in a "sink hole" from our creek, he was not in mud, just in a deep hole. He was part draft horse and the biggest (wantabe) lap horsie you could want. Jus stood there as we dug a ramp for him in the side of the embankement. Strolled on out, hours later. And then there was the horse, during winter, that rolled and his feet ended up on the uphill side of him. There was a crust on the snow and his back sunk in the snow. Had to shovel him out too and then roll him over before he could get out. So fun.

I used to have llamas that I kept in a friends pasture. Friends were getting divorced and so were subdividing their lot for more $. Septic test holes were dug in the pasture for this and one off my llamas fell into one of the holes. I was out of town then, so my friend ended up calling the fire department who came out with a ladder truck. They put a sling under the llama and lifted her out with the ladder, but not before all hopping into the hole with her for a photo!

WOW! That's crazy! I'm surprised they got that far with the guns!! I used to live in lynnwood! In 2000 worked for a Veterinary Orthopedic surgeon there, just didn't like it there and had to move back to the east side! Sorry, it was fun while it lasted but, after being stationed up there 25 years ago and all the changes, I didn't like where we lived and knew we couldn't afford to live on property up there, so we moved to Kennewick. The rest is history as they say! It cracks me up when owners act like their animals wouldn't do anything like that!! hello?? Anyone ever heard of instinct?? I truly believe that too many people humanize their pets and therefore do not "think" in terms of instinct and behavior! All you have to do is watch just a small portion of The Dog Whisperer and see how many people treat their pets! Ok, I'm jumping off the soap box now! lol!

Actually, MOST DAYS I don't like humans! I became a vet tech because I get along better with animals then people, I still had to deal with them, but, not continually! I really do feel for you!

The bad sparrows kick baby swallows out of their houses too. My mom hated those sparrows. She wouldn't hurt a fly, and put spiders outside but she would shoot a sparrow on site... What a nuisance they are.. right up there with starlings!

AND lets not forget everyone's favorite MAGPIES!!!!! I HATE those birds!!
rant.gif

I was not familiar with magpies until I saw them all over the campus at WSU. I don't believe we have them on the west side of the mountains. I thought they were pretty but I don't know anything about them. Are they nuisance birds?
