ok I just got 4 muscovy's about well, when ever the chicken show was, and I have 1 drake and three hens, two hens came with him and one is new, the drake keeps running this new one away and beating her up. I contacted the person I got them from and she said to lock the drake up for a week which I did! And he's still being mean to her!! Any ideas??

Trust me...don't hang on my every word...I am VERY inexperienced and VERY new. This is only my second hatch. I would not candle so soon again either. When is day 18? Might want to wait until then. I know others have said that too much candleing can upset and damage/kill embryos also. Wait for other responses and see what they say. If they don't stink...I would wait until all is said and done - if others say not to candle. I got a small flashlight that is used by police and FBI, etc...It is something like 250 lumens. When it is in my hand you can see the veins in my hand. Mine are on day 18 and will be in lockdown tonight when I get home. On my first candleing (first hatch) I had a small inexpensive flashlight. All I could see were dark lumps. Could not see a thing. My new flashlight, when I candled last friday, there were large lumps, but I could see air sacs, I could see faint veins on the edge of the large masses....BUT - I could see the large masses flutterig/moving. It was absolutely the coolest thing. It is such an amazing process. My flashlight was $50.

Someone, just recently showed how they added 2 rubber rings and a metal washer...in what order did this go? rubber rings against flashlight and then metal washer?

Anyway, You will be amazed, but ask everyone to see when you should candle again so you don't over stimulate/handle the eggs so that there is no damage done. Good luck. I hope some eggs hatch on the 12th - this is my DD 10th bday. She would be so happy if they hatched then.....LOL.

Well, happy birthday to her; it's one she shares with my cousin up the hill, and at least two others of my cousins. May is the best month for birthdays!

Thank you so very much. I will let her know....she really wants some chicks to hatch on her bday.

I did that. I used 2 washers on the end of the flashlight to narrow the beam of light, then used the rubber rings on top of that to increase the "cushion". Then I taped the whole mess together as securely and straight as possible. It was certainly an improvement over what I'd been using before. But boy howdy, I'll bet with 250 lumens you should almost be able to count their little toes! That is bright.

You can really see stuff with that flashlight - DH thinks it is only 225 though. All that I know is I can see stuff and I love it. I have orp eggs. I am definitely going to try the washer/rubber ring idea. Make sense to me. Oh, and it IS bright. Turns night to day. I probably blind the poor chicks.

hey as soon as my camera battery charges up I'll send out pics of the idea my boyfriend had, it worked awesome! I bought a pvc reducer and I used a smaller rubber washer !! You should check this out Sadiesue!! You had a great idea! See what you think of this one!

I didn't throw them out, I marked them and put them in one side of the incubator, I'm NOT experienced at candling

and the flash light I used was led and I don't know how powerful it was, I'm going to get another one and try again tomorrow. They don't smell ?......and they are due to hatch 5/20 hope that helps?? I'm going to use the flashlight sadiesue uses... I can see masses, just not veins and stuff! And my eyes aren't the best anyway, soo.. I'm hanging tight with what I have till I get a better look if I can and I'll keep asking questions, if i can get a picture I will post what I see.
Thanks T!!!

My husband said I have enough chicks right now,

Okay, you have to imagine the weights and measures vision of me weighing with my hands ..... does this make sense?

Husband vs. more chicks? Husband vs. more chicks? Husband vs. more chicks? Hmmmmm, this seems like an easy one to answer.

ok here is my version of sadiesues candling light. It has a 1/4 x1 -1/4 x1/16 Rubber washer and a 1 1/2 x 1/2 pvc reducer, same flash light, has some serious light!

We are in lockdown.

NOW: I have a question for chicken pros: What signals a chick to hatch? Is it the raise in humidity level? Is it the lack of space in the egg? Is it that the yolk sac has been used up? what? Can anyone answer this for me?
