You're in Lacey, too? So which bit of Lacey? (I'm on the farm out by SevenOaks).

HI neighbor. :) I am over by Cabela's, off 31st & Willamette in Christa Heights. The Farm is over off of college, right?

No, the real farm, the one with Shorthorns and oak trees, close to Union Mills. I tend to think of where you are as "over past Shipwreck Beads" myself.

I've been here a while; I can remember when The Farm over on college had actual Holsteins on it.

Hey, Clover! Remember that chick with the open navel? How long does it usually take if they are going to succumb to infection?

It CAN take several days, BUT for a new hatchling I would've expected it to be fairly quick....don't know for sure though... Is it all closed up and doing ok?

I didn't have the heart to cull so I have been nursing it along. It is now eating and drinking on it's own and has started running about. The navel is closed and is no longer red. It has only been 4 days so I told the kids not to get attached yet. I guess I thought it would have already died by now. It's a fighter, that's for sure.

Really someone told me that you cold freeze it.

Im sorry I told you that than. I almost bought some from her...

I'm sorry you got bad info, it states right on the vaccine do not freeze, as a tech I have personally never seen a vaccine that you could freeze and still be viable, quite a interesting issue!!!! I appreciate all the input, and response and I think not only myself but, many are benefiting from the responses!

Oh yes definitely - this is really valuable information. The more I learn, the better for my birds!

http://bestsmileys.com/wow/4.gif Wow! That's looking kewl... I want to do something like that (branches) on a smaller version around my garden once it's finally in. You must be up the hill in Indianola, and what the heck is that shiney stuff in the sky!!! LOL

Hope that weather holds out for ya. That's a TON of clearing, and those blackberries are NOT very forgiving...

Nope Im not up on the hill. Im actually right next to the Smythe Cedar Mill, and one property away from the Salmon Hatchery. 99% of the wood is directly off my property. There is one maple pole, the rest of the posts are all black locust taken off of my property. lol Will last a lifetime, and I was chastised by the Mill owner for using such expensive wood for posts! He told me that each 8' section of log, is right around $350. So Im kinda thinking that I have THE most expensive round pen around here! LOL

but the landlord wants it all gone.

Sell the locust and buy pressure treated 4x4! looks good but when you said it was 'solid wood' I invisioned solid wood. We had the coolest round pens in college. Solid walled roundpens that leaned to the outside. So nice for no knocking your knees! And you didn't have to worry about the horses getting their feet through the sides if they acted goofy. So safe. And the sand would stay contained. Would die for one of those round pens now.

That's the issue I'm running into too....too many staggered hatches mean I have to buy like 10 bottles of Mareks.
sad.png
Most of the other ones are okay for 4+ month old birds (or even adults) but the Mareks has be to given at 1 day old.
hmm.png
Not to mention you're supposed to use it within 1/2 hour.

The other issue is that once mixed, NONE of the vaccines are viable for more than an hour, tops!

Some of the others, you need booster vaccinations 3 weeks or so later to even make the first vaccine worth your while.
barnie.gif

So then you're looking at another expense of buying MORE vaccine for the boosters, mixing it and then trying to catch & "shoot" 70+ birds in record time.

Hopefully, one day they will come up with a 4 or 5 way vaccine (like they have in horses) and one that can be stored!

Hey that is cool. We live over on Johnson Pt Rd. Pretty close to you. So there is 3 or 4 of us that live in Lacey Olympia area. And a few down south. We need to do a Secret Get Together for the south end group.

I don't think Mareks has to be given at 1 day old. It's just the sooner the better. The longer they are unprotected the longer they are exposed. I think another post mentioned having vaccine parties for 3 weeks worth of their own hatches plus their friends.
