Could you use a wet/dry vac to get a hive?

YES and NO they do make a bee vac. very pricey. I plan to build my own that will be corded or cordless. See the problem is that the vac can't be very strong or it kills too many bees. I have used a small shop vac and reduced the air flow. We had about 75% survival. Not bad considering I didn't know what I was doing and people told me it wouldnt work.
But really for a swarm if you can get to them it is best to just sweep into a box. Once the Queen is in you can tell and the rest will follow.

Congratulations! You get your home back to yourself and chicks will have their own digs. That will be nice for everyone. I'm looking forward to that happening soon here as well.

Stump -

That's a good point about dual purpose. Gah! Why is picking a breed so difficult!

I think -- I'll do two -- RIR's for eggs and meaties and Wyandottes for eye candy -- oh and some EE's or Ameracauna's just for fun

I need more coops.

I know that was my answer the first two times the question was asked. It may be my answer the rest of today, too, except for the essential chicken feeding parts. My allegedly better shoulder won't hold anything heavier than a coffee cup, the crunched ribs are not getting better for me acting like I'm not hurt, and my daughter's going in to work today to make up some of the time she missed Saturday (when she ended up working seven hours on the Tower of Solitude).

There is the matter of needing to wash about seventy-leven loads of laundry, but I will ignore that for the moment and dream of the happy land where I have the ability to sleep in the daytime when there's work to be done.

I say definently stick with the Wyandotte's and consider them dual purpose too. They are gorgeous and friendly and when we processed our extra roo's last fall, the Wyandotte had the most meat on it! Of course it's always fun to have other breeds in your layer flock. That's what we do. We have a mixed flock of 12-15 birds that are all assorted varieties/breeds. Then we have our breeding pens, which have the different projects we are working on. And as I always sy, there are NEVER ENOUGH COOPS!!!!

Sure is quiet around here!

Hope all you Dad's, Grandpa's and other Father Figures had a nice day yesterday. We took DH down to Lakewood to Eagle Leather to get him a new jacket for riding. Then we went to Point Defiance Zoo. Then we headed over to Bremerton to catch the ferry back to Seattle. The kids LOVED doing that when we visited CGG to get chicks, and had to show dad. Then we stopped at Buca di Beppo for dinner! So all in all, we had a nice day and I think DH enjoyed it too.

Good news is, I HAD to recandle my eggs again on Saturday, just to see what things were looking like after forgetting to put them back in the bator after candling them on Friday which was Day 10. Well I only candled 4 because ALL of them were still dancing!!! Whoooo hoooo! So there is definently still hope for a good hatch.
