Sunday I put up some chain link panels and penned the chickens up, they free ranged during the day usually...until they decided to start hiding eggs. lost their freedom. so Rosalee the serama I got from Jbear went on strike and refused to lay an egg...or so I thought. she was all mopey this evening so I grabbed her and checked , she was egg bound. I gave her the olive oil treatment...half later she laid this. the egg on the right is Rosalee's the egg on the left is an orpington egg...

that looks big. All of ours have been tiny. What is the olive oil treatment? How do you do this?

ummm lol I only had olive oil so I tipped her upside down and drizzled a bit of oil in her vent. she gurgled a little. I rubbed around the egg and then put her in a crate. egg came out in a half hour

Pretty sure I'm the world's meanest chicken mom. When I got home from work today I looked at my 6 week old chicks and realized today was the day they needed to move out even if the mini coop isn't built yet. I set the X pen into a square configuration inside the run with their big chick feeder and waterer and let them go. Hoo boy were they having fun scratching, jumping, running around! 3 of the hens were not too pleased about these intruders, but amazingly, the Sussex, who is queen of the coop and the actual mother of 2 of the babies, watched them clucking almost contentedly and chased the other big girls away from the X pen.

I watched them all for a long time and everyone was settling in nicely. I moved the rabbit cage into the X pen and about 7 pm secured the babies before I left for my Zumba class. When I returned the hens were in their usual quarters for the night, but as soon as the babies saw me they started chirping loudly like "isn't this the part where you swoop us up and bring us back inside the house?" just as I've done every other time they've visited outdoors. I felt like I'd abandoned them this time.
With steely reserve, I turned and left them. However, the coop is just below my bedroom deck and the sliding glass doors are open. I haven't heard a peep in the past 2 hours. Of course I'll be checking on them before I go to bed.

Tomorrow I reclaim my home. For the time being anyway.
