WooHoo! Looks like my evil plan paid off. Chicken shaped bobbers for our fishing trip. Now I can quit making those trips 4 or 5 times a day in a southeasterly direction to mess with your thermostat and your head. Wahahahaaaaaa (evil laugh)

OK... Quick what can you do to get them hatched. Anybody you know down that direction with a silky or two that would hatch them for you?

How to NOT introduce a new bird to the flock

Geez, you think I am smart enough to read up before I did this. I introduced my new EE yesterday to the flock, but did not separate them. What a mistake. My BR was totally fine, and my two BOs were kinda ok. My Black Australorp, Georgia is really unhappy. She will not stop pecking and grabbing at the EE. I finally separated her from the group this morning. They all roosted ok last night, but nothing has changed this morning. So with Georgia in jail, everything is fine. She is a little aggressive anyway, and does pick on my two BOs more than not.

So bad flock management, I know now.

Question is... how long can I separate my Australorp? I want to knock her down a rung or two in the order... Thoughts? HELP?

My BA is my problem child too. I've had her in chicken jail for as long as a week before, it didn't help much, but gives the new one a little more peace while they integrate. I've always introduced new birds in pairs though.

The last time I introduced new pullets. I had a Gold Laced Wyandotte scream 24/7, not so much pecking, just screaming. I brought her in for about a week. Much better after that. My BA at the time was OK with the new ones. Weird Chickens.

Ugh. Ok. I am going to have to figure out a longer term solution to see if I can make it work.

You could put another one in with your BA if you feel you should keep her seperate for a long while. Let her be by herself for at least 3-4 days, then maybe put one of her friends in with her. Or if you let yours free range at all during the day, you can put her(BA) out with the group and separate her when the others go back in the coop or run. That way she has some time with the group and the new one but not so much that she can really pick on her too much. They seem to be much better with each other when they free range.

And I would have to agree with Nyrial, it is recommended to introduce at least a pair into a flock. Singles have a harder time. But with careful observation I think you will do fine. Just be prepared for it to take longer than you think.

Oh, I have had my BR in chicken jail more than a few times since I introduced my Marans and Ameraucana last Sept. She still doesn't always get along with my Marans. She is the bully of the group. Good Luck!!
