So, did I say we got some kittens? Two of them, in fact. They are currently inhabitting the hall bathroom so they get used to their litter box/sleeping and eating facilities/living inside before we let them out into the house. There's also the problem that since we've lived in this house the cats have been fed on a shelf in the kitchen, minus the short time Jack and Elvyra were being bottlefed and lived in my bathroom (a mistake I'll not make again, let me tell you). We still have big tall dogs, so cat food has to be secured from them, but Stewie and Lana are not up to the shelf of yet.
So DH & his parents went out to the Timm Ranch (about 1.5 hour drive) this morning to pick up a dance floor for the wedding....it was under some tarps & just a pile of rotten plywood. So they drove back. Now, DH & my FIL are going to have to BUILD a dance floor. They are doing a 16' x 16' plywood platform. DH was like, "they're going to spend all of this money and we're going to spend all of this time building this and then what?" I told him I had an idea for what to do with it...and his response--NO MORE COOPS!
Who said anything about coops?
So I waited until DH & FIL went to Home Depot and called my MIL. I told her that the platform would make an excellent base for my next (free range) chicken coop. She was like, "OH--that IS a good idea!" I told her we could split it down the middle and put it out next to their barn and both have more eggs and maybe raise meaties on one side!
She's all for it. She's like, "Oh I'll talk to Randy when he gets home!"
Just had a nice visit with Jbear, Keneke and CR at the Yardbirds Auction. You guys are great!!!
I must say that BYC people as soooo nice! Easy to hang out and chat with.
Guess that's why we are heading towards 45k posts on this thread!
DH drove us down after all, turns out we had another couple of errands to run on the way back
interesting animals showed up at the auction --- one little bantam, I swear, looked just like a miniature owl ...
the goat was amusing
the kittens were cute as, well, ... kittens .....
the peacocks were unusually colored, very loud, hardly fitted into the cages
one white dove/pigeon got completely loose, flew around the auction area, out of reach, and finally spotted the 3" gap between top of fencing and ceiling -- so over he/she went, and off into the wild blue yonder ....
I drooled over some spangled ones -- Hamburgs?? --- and a cochin cross with millefleur type plumage
but I HAVE AS MANY CHICKENS AS I NEED NOW --- in fact probably a few too many
good chat about feed, types of feed, prices of feed, additives to feed .... and which brands get cleaned up pronto, which get left on ground
(my lot is NOT liking the Purina that DH bought; when I told him, get generic/store-brand game bird feed, he talked to the store guys and came home with Flock Raiser .... and my flock prefers wild grass seed to THAT )
I should leave those pullets alone more often
we came home to .. not one,,,, but TWO eggs
one a slightly more olive one than the minty green ones I've been getting
one essentially pale blue (DH said it was GRAY) -- with the slightest touch of green to it
both the same size .. no double yolk ones today
instead of utilizing the ex-litterbox nest box in the coop (which is where the eggs were laid so far), they used the VariKennel in the run, that I just put shredded paper into, yesterday --- there is another one in there too, a larger ex-kitty-litterbox, the paper nest material in there was pushed around, but no egg
