I've given up on catching up .... you all have been too chatty since the weather turned!

Question:

If I put clear plastic wastebasket bags (the flimsy Costco ones) over my tomato cages and move the 5 in pots out of the rain, will the bags act as mini greenhouses, or should I just pick all my green tomatoes and call this year yet another bust? I have 10 plants loaded with green tomatoes.

I saw the "Where am I? Where are you!" are and was excited to see who's in Washington. However, I don't think I will be able to catch up on the over 4,000 pages.

I will check back a few pages and give it a go.

I'm in Everett and work in Snohomish. Moved back after living in California for about eight years. Was so excited to get out of here, then couldn't get back quick enough.

I have give two week old chicks hanging out in my guest bedroom. They are my first and I'm already madly in love with them.

[EDIT] Change the over 4,000 to almost 5,000. Wow, I don't think I've seen a thread this long. Glad to see so many local and somewhat local people here!!!

2 days in a row now, I have found a large, very pale, almost white egg in my coop. It is longer and narrower and much more pale than what I get from the light sussex or Wyandotte. Who's is it? Choices are 4 girls all chicks this spring and very near POL, one of each of these breeds has a red comb now : Barred Rock (hatchery- Issaquah Grange), EE (hatchery, Issaquah Grange), Lavender Orp (cowgirlgrace), Cuckoo Marans (Chickielady). These eggs are full-size - never had a fart egg from the bird. I'm thinking that both of the cuckoos are laying but thier eggs are indistinguishable from the Barnevelders as some days I have more Barnie eggs than I have Barnie hens.

Also, my Light Sussex is going through a serious molt now - is it normal fo a hen to help the feathers out? she had an almost bare spot on her back, and I watched her today pull out the last few feathers from the spot. She looks awful and when I pick her up, she feels like a porcupine - covered in pin feathers! She seems to care less about how unattractive she currently looks and is still quite friendly and has a good appetite. She leaves a trail of down and feathers wherever she goes. I'm thinking the New Hampshire and one of the old EE's are next as their egg production slowed waaaay down and their combs are not quite so red. The NH lost a bunch of feathers to the dog in the spring, so maybe she won't have to shed out as many.

my guess: large, pale, narrow --- it's the EE ... very very pale blue or very very pale salmon, or almost "stone" color ?

not as familiar with the other breeds ... I know my White Rock laid very very white eggs ... she's quit laying now but then, she's about six .... ex battery hen, who mothered several broods and has had a lovely free range retirement

you can crack the egg and peel off the membraine to see if shell has any blue tint. if it does its the EE
do any of the barred have white ears? it could be a barred if hatchery stock is bad.
