I'd wait until you have the coop ready, unless you can enclose them somehow. Even when your coop is ready, if you plan to let them free range outside of the coop, I'd keep them in the coop for 4 or 5 days before letting them free range so they learn where their safe home is.

Pretty eggs! I SO wish my pullets, (including my big BCM) would start laying! I think they're about 23 weeks now. I can't wait to see what color eggs they give us.
I'm looking forward to Chehalis. I had to miss that one last year.

Mine are 22 weeks today, so your's should be any day! I was on the Marans thread a week ago asking some questions about my rooster, and saying I hoped the pullets started laying before winter truly sets in. They told me there that if my roo was getting busy with the girls, I'd see eggs in approximately 2 weeks, and WALA!!! There they are!

I had meant to get the lights going this weekend in the main layer coop at least, but that didn't happen. It was a huddle by the wood fire kind of weekend instead.

Yes take away the food up to 24 hours before butcher time. That way his crop won't be full. I can't say that I have noticed any really nasty smells when butchering. We can do about 14 birds in an afternoon without really pushing hard. Just remember we don't pluck feathers. We skin the birds and I de-bone most of the meat. I have some links for tutorials that I could dig out if you want them.

Thanks Justbugged!

I have some very good memories of that road! Love the drive along the Wa/Or border. I don't think I could ever forget those tunnels.

Not anything spectacular?!?!?! Did you see Sheryl Butler's sebastopols (the pair, not mine which are still getting feathers back in), the toulouse (one of which was a late May hatch bird and already has keel and dewlap almost as big as parents), and the embdens (which are also May hatch birds and females to boot, and HUGE).... there was also a couple really good black cochins there and moderns from Heather Hayes and Joe Mazur, and I didn't think the silkies were half bad either

The turkey wasn't mine. I brought ten geese so I left my turkey at home. He's looking forward to Thanksgiving.

The HUGE national show is in a couple weeks so many exhibitors that usually come were not there. Due to the Crossroads show, it was much smaller than normal.

...and what's wrong with silkies?????

Illia you did not miss anything again....waite for Chehalis & then go show..it will be much better.
Monroe is awesome, too.

Maybe you can meet up with me & catch a ride to Monroe, and I will have a few crates, but I do have the backseat in my van now, and behind there room for lotsa crates..

and I bought a white silkie pullet today from Sheryl......who always seems to have 100 birds to sell.
I am also getting very partial to Seremas....especially DH, and especially after we go to the feed store.

Warning, silkies are quite addictive if you have the right place for them. I know this by experience.

Now I wish I had entered my little mottled Java hen. It sounds like she could have won.

Psshh you American Class people.

What about AOSB? Or the Continental Class?

If you want some competition in the american class,.. I can arrange for some wyandottes to be there.

Also, if it weren't deer season and Tony Albritton made it, his wyandottes are something hard to beat.

I saw no LF Cornish or games.
NONE.
There was alot of moderns & alot of bantam cornish, as usual.
Sad. You gotta come & show at Chehalis Illia!

Games are rare,.. there were modern games and english games. Brian Decker had LF cornish, sold them to a guy who had to give up his birds, the guy who has them might start showing later but is canadian. The border is always an issue.... vet certificates and all.

Sheryl Butler does not have a website selling silkies. She teaches Dressage fulltime. She does almost always have stock for sale.

Umm,.. dunno about a lot of W's.
