I love mine they are the friendlist chickens I have ever owned. That said, as chicks they were not friendly but when around 3-4 months old, they began to attach themselves to anyone that comes in the run. I want to always have some around.

I could not find any local, had to order hatchery. Now a few more seem to be around, I think CR had some. They are still filling out and their ails are looking better all the time, I bet they need a year to get full size.

CL also helped me with this. This is how I do it and makes things SOOOOOO much cleaner and nicer. I also have a thick layer of sand on the floors, absorbs heat and it is easy to clean.

Sand in the poop trays under roosts is excellent!
I sift the sand every 2 days or so depending on how many birds are in each coop...keeps the coops very clean, and the sandy poops go in a bucket & out to the compost.

Oh, and I do not have ladder roosts anymore, got tired of stooping.
My poop trays are on the nest boxes, so I do not have to crawl around under roosts cleaning the floor.
I am too old for that !!

Where do y'all get the plastic trays you use as poop trays? I can't run around looking, so I need to know I can buy something for sure before I leave the house.

Use the dilution recommended by both WSU and the SPPA: 2 cups of bleach in a 1 gallon milk container, then fill with water, and label as SOLUTION>

I get tired of giving the recipe..
Then fill with water, then fill a spray bottle, and go spray your toilet, sink, countertops, 1 Tablespoon in 2 cups of 120 degree water to wash eggs per the ag dept, for 30 seconds, and you can clean your shower (no more foot rot or any other nasties) and what ever else you want!
Bleach is the only thing that kills everything....do not spray it in anything's eyes.
You can spray this solution on dirty socks before they go in the washer!!!

Use 1 T per gallon of water for your well birds.
use 2 Tablespoons per gallon for sick birds to kill e-coli.
Kills fungal infections, strept and every other nasty bacterial or fungal infection, and all viruses.
Including Athelete's foot in the shower, and ringworm.

Hey Lady! Whats the recipe again?!?

Gardener's and preserver's help Please,
I want to either dehydrate or freeze some curly kale for the chooks this winter. They realy like it and I think when it's really cold out they would appreciate some mixed in a nice warm batch of mush.

So do you think I should slice it thin and freeze it or dry it?

My house was built in the 50's. We had a local mill so many houses had sawdust for insulation. We had blow in insulation put in 2 years ago. At the time, I had 5 inches of sawdust insulation in our attic. I was told that this was equivelent to R5 rating. No wonder I was so cold.

I have a piece of plywood under my roost (not a ladder roost - just 1 pole) I just had it ripped down the center so it is 2 x 8. I built a frame and put it under the roost. I put a bit of a lip on it using some of the cheap 1 x 4 that Home Depot has in their discount section. This just helps to keep in the sand. I then put sand on the plywood. It is exactly like a giant litter box. I think the plastic bin you saw on CL is a big black "thing" they use to mix concrete in. I have some of those that I bought for multiple uses (including under the bunny pen where she potties to catch all her stuff for my garden)... Also purchased at Home Depot. Also, I did not buy sand by the bag, I had a dump truck load brought in. I put a good thick layer down in my runs, the coop, and it is used for the poop trays too.

eta: CL does not use those black trays for poop trays (I don't believe) she uses those for the birds to have a dust bath. There is sand and then she mixes in something to help keep down skin issues. (again, I think)

The coop is still not done. *sigh*

Here are the pics I got yesterday. Why do you suppose he puts all those diagonal wood pieces on the run walls? Do they offer support like that, or is it more decorative?
