You can use shelving for the poop trays. 1x8, 1x10 or 1x12. they come in I think 6,8 and 10 ft lenghts you might have to support them with 2x4's depending on how long they will have to be. ya can get the ones that have the white or brown vinyl on them. you can even use particle board ones and put cardboard down on it before putting the sand on it.
I use the multipurpose sand instead of the play sand. it is cheaper and is alittle more gritty

I, for one, have never been offended.
On the contrary, I find your posts a lot of fun and I love seeing your art and I love hearing of your hard-won successes.
I hope your "time has come I gotta run" is just another joke for you would be sorely missed around here.
Anyone who has followed your posts for a time knows you have a huge heart of gold!

Ref to Kale, chard, and spinach, you can cover the plants with straw and have it through most of the winter, I did in Mi where it got into the -20s regularly. When the sun hits it will pop right back up, chard and kale are the two I found best for this.

thats a very nice coop, about the size I need a couple of.

Sand in the poop trays under roosts is excellent!
I sift the sand every 2 days or so depending on how many birds are in each coop...keeps the coops very clean, and the sandy poops go in a bucket & out to the compost.

Oh, and I do not have ladder roosts anymore, got tired of stooping.
My poop trays are on the nest boxes, so I do not have to crawl around under roosts cleaning the floor.
I am too old for that !!

Where do y'all get the plastic trays you use as poop trays? I can't run around looking, so I need to know I can buy something for sure before I leave the house.

I use leftover scraps of vinyl flooring on my poop board.
So easy to clean.

I love your garden video. I have a question about the how the totes and plants handle the freezing? I would think that with the sides of the soil being exposed to the cold, that the plant would freeze and die. Are you mulching in and around the totes? Also what is the white stuff on top of the soil in the video from the 16th? Don't feel obligated to answer if you don't want to. I am just very curious by nature, and just a little nosy too.

I am going to have to learn how to take and post videos. It's not like I don't have the camera for it.

Your coop looks very well made and I really like how he's trimming it out.
Your posts are going to be his best advertisement!
Bet you - and those growing girls of yours - can hardly wait for it to be done!

I have a piece of plywood under my roost (not a ladder roost - just 1 pole) I just had it ripped down the center so it is 2 x 8. I built a frame and put it under the roost. I put a bit of a lip on it using some of the cheap 1 x 4 that Home Depot has in their discount section. This just helps to keep in the sand. I then put sand on the plywood. It is exactly like a giant litter box. I think the plastic bin you saw on CL is a big black "thing" they use to mix concrete in. I have some of those that I bought for multiple uses (including under the bunny pen where she potties to catch all her stuff for my garden)... Also purchased at Home Depot. Also, I did not buy sand by the bag, I had a dump truck load brought in. I put a good thick layer down in my runs, the coop, and it is used for the poop trays too.

Yeah, buying sand by the dumptruck-load is not going to happen here; it disappears too fast in wet weather. I'm actually on essentially pure sand, anyway, if I were in better shape I'd just go down to the end of the field and dig up a wheelbarrow load but not this decade, thanks.

I'm looking for something lighter than plywood for making poop trays. Sand is heavy for me anyway, adding the weight of wood is just not wise.
