Okay all you chicken pros.......

.....Got another question for you.

I have a pullet who is not looking well. I thought maybe she was getting hit with Cocci and was starting to treat with Corid. Her crop/craw (not sure how to spell it) is hard. I have not checked it this morning but will be soon. It is full and hard. Has been for a couple of days. I think that she ate too much of the corn I set out..maybe? Or she ate something else, what I am not sure of. so I am assuming she is "plugged up"....what is this called? How do I treat it? Is this like bloat in a cow? Is there any treatment?

Uh oh. Sounds like an impacted crop - that could be why she's been so thin. BUT check it this morning, if it's still big and hard, you've got a problem on your hands. Try syringing her olive oil and massaging the crop gently. Often. If it doesn't work, it may require other intervention to get the impaction cleared out....

This is a different bird. The one orp does have cocci and she is separated in a warm room and is being medicated.
Okay, so. Impacted crop....I will go do some BYC reading. Warm olive oil? What about a warm bath? will this help move things? what is other intervention?

thank you.

I don't really know about other things, I've never had to treat impacted crop before, those are the only treatments I have read about, the olive oil and then if that doesn't work....surgery.

Good luck with her!!!

Found a good web site:

Even explains, if you have to do it, how to do a "surgery" to remove it. I am going to go check her right now. I will bring her in the house. Sheesh...my spare bedroom is turning into a triage room for birds.

eta: Thank you.

eta: Well that was just the craziest of things. Gave her 3 or 4 droppers of warmed up olive oil. massaged the crop. I could feel it dicipate. It is gone. She still had it when I brought her to the triage room (spare bedroom). I even had DH feel it. Felt like she had swallowed a couple of golf balls - hard as a rock. She is even acting better already. She fluffed up and preened some .... then sat there and looked at me.... looking much more comfortable. Will leave her in triage room for a couple of days and give her soft food. It was weird...you could feel it break up in her crop as you massaged it.

You did it exactly right. Some vegetable oil, and/or warm water into the crop works wonders.

If, you feed DE that can rarely contribute to this, but it can.

Well done !

Shame on me I am just a wee bitout spoken. sowry.

Well, sure but adjusting timers to please DH is the least of my compromises. I pick my battles and that aint one of them.

I have DE...but hardly ever use it in the feed. More on the roosts, ground and poop boards. I have been going in and checking her...I keep massaging as it seems to kind of come back a little...but she is already feeling so much better. It is just the weirdest thing. I have never had to deal with this before. Now I know. Learned something new. Thanks to all that helped.
