Your Cock bird or a hen?
A full grown Cock bird would have ran to save the hens & sacrificed himself or maybe won the fight...so sad.sorry!!

An immature Bald eagle would have no problem carrying off a hen.

We saw (darn it!) a adult bald eagle carrying a 4-5 foot long stick yesterday, about 2-3 inches thick.
The bird flew THROUGH the power lines without nicking them dispite it's wingspan + the length of stick..around & back THROUGH the power lines again (this is BPA lines) and lodged in a tree about 5 acres away from us.
OH GOODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in rural Eatonville.

I buy organic layer pellets from the Graham Feed Store @ $23.74 for a 50/lb bag and organ chick starter @ $14.72 for a 25/lb bag.

Sometime's I go out to King Feed or Del's, but they're not on my usual errand routes and I'm not going to drive extra miles out of my way unless the savings on the feed makes it worth my while for time and gas. The gals usually free-range it on chemical-free acreage and are only supplemented with the feed, fruit and veggie scraps, and BOSS.

I stopped buying organic feed almost a year ago when I paid over $30 (including tax) for 50# bag of Payback layer. Sorry - but at those prices I'd have to sell my eggs at $7 per dozen just to break even!

I do sell my normal free range eggs for $5 a doz. $3.50 1/2 doz... and i am always sold out. planning to sell the duck eggs at $7. we been paying $15 for 50# feed for 3 years now. can't find anyone here that would sell in bulk. i did try a local guy who mixed grain and sold for $.23 per pound.... but my chickens quit laying this summer after i switched to that feed.... so its Layeena forever for me... i been wanted to call purina and have it delivered directly... but i think they would laugh at me. I now go through 300 pounds every 2 weeks probably more cos of the scratch. that is why my eggs are priced at minimum of $5.

I got more coming..... right?????????????????

As for the Cougar Cheese
the student store next door has the small cans (didn't check the oz) for $25.99 without tax. I saw Viking, Cougar Gold, and there might have been another flavor... I havent checked Safeway (they carry it here)

Ferdinans doesn't keep normal business hours for me to go in. since it is run by the food science students and not as a "real" business its a bit hit and miss. Trust me i have been ticked many times at night when i want an ice cream fix ($1 gets you tons) and have to go to B&R...

Yes, it is...

I wonder if I should try hatching some cheap eggs before I pay for the breeds I really want to hatch - since I've never done this before.

Yes, you do! In fact, I was just tucking the girls in and noticed that while all seven chicks fit on the roost last night with mommy - it's much tighter in there tonight! (No one wants the lower roost!)

Can't have roosters so close to neighbors. My coop is 30ft from the neighbors house let alone their bedroom. We are mobile homes on small lots/ 1/2 acres. My RIR's have been pretecting themselves by pecking at my dogs. So I think this hen went to protect & she got it. I did find my other RIR in the coop by herself so I think one protected the other so the other could run for cover. My guess anyway. I did want to get down to an even number of birds for the winter, 9 down to 8 by rehoming 1 but I didn't want it that way.
