We had a hard frost - everything is frozen. It is still very pretty out with the sun sparkling on the frost covered leaves and lawn. The kids are bringing warm water out to the chickens.

DH and I went out on a date last night, it was a semi-formal event, and as I was scrambling to get ready for it, I found out I don't own lipstick, eyeliner, or panty hose. Of course It was 4:30 when I checked the invite to see what time it started; 5 pm! I still had to shower and get ready! I did not have time to run to the grocery store for some. I also don't own appropriate clothing, so I wore black jeans and a long sleeved T-shirt with an inset panel that was a little sparkly - I figured if the room was dim enough nobody would be able to see the fabric. What I should have switched were my shoes. I wore heels. I am soooo not graceful in heels especially once the wine starts flowing.

DH and I almost never go out. No exaggeration, I think this was the 6th or 7th time we went out without the kids since we married more than 14 years ago. It was our usual date; the Autumn Gala fundraiser for Encompass which is a great, local organization that helps families out with free in-home Physical therapy, speech therapy, OT, and all sorts of other great services. We only go once every several years because DH is a softie - put up a slide-show of some hospital shots of disabled children, and get a pretty mom up there with her sad story, and he's soon bidding crazy on every auction item until we max out the card (I was less than $2,000 away from having it paid off!) This year was no different. He does not even pay attention to what he bids on. One of the things we came home with last night is a voucher to use someone's private dock for 2 weeks of boat moorage over Seafair weekend and a week on either side. We don't own a boat. We don't even know anyone local who owns a boat. Then I thought we could just pull up some lawn-chairs and sit of the dock to watch the show. Nope. It is in Rainier Beach - too far south to see the action. Another item he bid on but did not get was a 3 day Harley Davidson Motorcycle rental, complete with leathers and use of a cute little cabin near Leavenworth. I don't think we would have fit into the leathers, and I would have had to learn to ride a bike (something he's been trying to get me to do for nearly 2 decades).

The good news is we will be going to Hawaii! We got 5 nights at a house on 4 acres in Maui - I'm relieved as 4 acres means it is not in a crowded area. We also got a $180 voucher for pet-sitting. I hope they do chickens! This will be our first family vacation that involves airplanes. The kids have been on a plane once before when we flew to Texas to visit my ailing FIL a few summers ago. DS is afraid to fly. He had to sit by the window so he could hold the shade down and not see how high up we were!

The fundraiser netted $330,000 for the charity! People in the Snoqualmie Valley are very generous.

Okay, I (think I) am getting in a shipment of chickens from Forks this evening. Where are they going and who are they going to? PM me. Thanks!

It took some convincing in the first place, and I think after 4 days of wandering the woods looking for elk and sleeping on a couch, he is going to want to come straight home and go to bed, so I don't think he would be willing to make any detours on the way.

I told him that all he had to do was pick up the chickens, come home, go to bed, and I would do the rest.

It should be here:

I own 2 machines: An old viking from the late 60's early 70's (You should see the photos in the manuals!) and a chepo $150 Husky that was a promo a few years ago, and does not fit standard Husky/viking bobbins and other parts. I bought it because the old machine broke, and it was cheaper than a repair bill. It will only sew the thinnest of fabrics.

Sorry. Im not laughing AT you! Im really laughing at myself and your situation! See, I own 3 sewing machines, and can not remember for the life of me how to thread the bobbins on ANY of them! No manual for iether of them as well... So I know exactly what you are going through! And it is OH so frustrating.

Okay, when looking at the machine, grab a hold of the left side of the machine above the needle and open the cover, there should be a hinge in the back where essentially the whole left side comes off. Most machines have a diagram printed on the inside of that on how to thread it. Or, it opens it up so you can actually see where you are supposed to thread it.

Edited to add: In the second picture in the link Ogeress put up, you can see the hinge I am talking about.

I'm totally laughing at myself. I just finished watching a bunch of youtube videos. Why didn't I think of that before? I was able to figure out the thread path, and then how to load the bobbin! This machine is way different than the other machines I see on youtube though - but I think I have it!

Thank you for this, I might end up purchasing the manual there just so I can figure out how to care for it properly. I inherited this from my grandmother and it's been sitting for several years...I haven't touched a sewing machine since seventh grade home ec! I also tried to find out how old the machine is - think it's from the seventies and the older ones do seem to be so much better! I found that it was made in England for import to the US - at least that's what it said in the article I found

It's hard to find much info on this one! But I'm thankful to have it and in such great condition, and lots of spare parts & bobbins!

Thank you for this! It's just painted steel - but I am pretty sure I figured it out now.

Now I need to go get new thread - what I have keeps breaking. Too old or thin I think!

I went to count the white clouds in my dd's room - used to have five - three just disappeared? I asked if they had been fed recently...she gave me that look that told me where the other three went.
