Aggressive males don't make the best free range flock protectors either, honestly. They're just a danger to people, kids, other/small pets, and can sometimes end up aggressive towards hens or chicks.
I truly agree. Thank you guys for your advice. I do not want to show him and I haven't hatched, given away, etc any of the eggs. The eggs have been eaten and so will he be. He won't even make it to the freezer! Hopefully, he won't eat ME before the weekend.
Thanks CR. Guess that's as good an invite as I'll ever get. The news from "home" and all the weather troubles is astounding! It's sounding worse than last year. Mom lives just outside of Monroe with her Blue and Gold Macaws and a ringneck or two. I grew up in North Seattle, lived in Yakima for 8 years and then spent about 18 years near Lake Stevens before coming to California seven years ago. Having raised and shown dogs for years and Borzoi at that, I'm new to chickens. I never had the nerve to raise such tempting prey for the dogs. Fresh eggs got the best of me so we have embarked on a new adventure since we have the space. So far so good with a trio of Black Copper Marans to begin with. So far these first are a bit experimental. No free ranging here and we hope to add a couple of Australorps to see how we like them. Knowing myself, I could become a bit obsessive over the chickens eventually and want a show quality flock. Thank you all for the great snow pictures and tales of woe. Finally our winter rains have come on with a vengeance. We even lost power for the first time last night . A mere three hours this time. This fall and winter have been blessed so far as usually the rains begin around Thanksgiving. Sorry Illia on the loss of your Shamo and congrats on the fireside hatching by RedRoosterFarm. Great photos of the North Bend snopack Ogress. I don't know if I'm doing this posting stuff quite right but here goes. This is my brothers home between Marysville and Kayak Pt. welcome! I show dogs also and have had borzoi, shown them a little, nothing serious though. been a while since I have had a zoid. beautiful dogs, they would probably love to catch chickens lol
interesting. plant physiology 416.... the calmodulin was originally extracted from chicken brains then cloned and used to study in plants because it is the same chemical, but is harder to isolate in plants.... but adding it in plants you can see calcium signaling.... calcium makes the world go around. this class makes my head hurt....

While I am sure it may not be an easy choice. It is nice to see you are thinking with your head and not your heart. I also think cull is the right choice over re-home.
Wow - so many of you have really been through it with that awful storm! Nasty driveways (some with deadly drop-offs, too), eggs hatching by firelight, pens busted, trees down - I'm glad everyone came through it mostly intact. I will never complain about the rain again - even though most Southern Californians don't seem to know how to drive in it...
Welcome Zoichick from a fellow Californian! This is a really nice group of people - and very accepting of foreigners like us
And Illia, I'm really, really sorry about your roo. I just went through it, too - my dog got one of my pullets last week and it broke my heart.
Happy Monday all -
I guess the cabin fever finally got to our bantam roos last night, the alpha took out the beta rooster. Either that, or the ladies got tired of having two of them. Otherwise, the pens did all right. Bit of damage to the fencing from the winds - we'll be nailing the fencing panels back to the posts this week. The wire fencing in the pens did worse, branches overburdened by snow fell on them, twisting and bending them. We may have to replace a few sections. At this point, the ducks are free and now I have to decide if we can fix those pens before breeding season begins or if its better to sell them off.
just got an email for internships at the Smithsonian in D.C..... it looks interesting but i would have to provide food and housing.... $420/week stipend is what they give for graduates (which by summer i hope to be)
what do you think? its for 10-16 weeks... but where would i find housing for that amount of time? it would be impressive to have on a resume saying "i worked for the smithsonian"
