I see we are being spied on by a Californian Come on and say HI we really don't bite ! ! !
Thanks CR. Guess that's as good an invite as I'll ever get. The news from "home" and all the weather troubles is astounding! It's sounding worse than last year. Mom lives just outside of Monroe with her Blue and Gold Macaws and a ringneck or two. I grew up in North Seattle, lived in Yakima for 8 years and then spent about 18 years near Lake Stevens before coming to California seven years ago. Having raised and shown dogs for years and Borzoi at that, I'm new to chickens. I never had the nerve to raise such tempting prey for the dogs. Fresh eggs got the best of me so we have embarked on a new adventure since we have the space. So far so good with a trio of Black Copper Marans to begin with. So far these first are a bit experimental. No free ranging here and we hope to add a couple of Australorps to see how we like them. Knowing myself, I could become a bit obsessive over the chickens eventually and want a show quality flock. Thank you all for the great snow pictures and tales of woe. Finally our winter rains have come on with a vengeance. We even lost power for the first time last night . A mere three hours this time. This fall and winter have been blessed so far as usually the rains begin around Thanksgiving. Sorry Illia on the loss of your Shamo and congrats on the fireside hatching by RedRoosterFarm. Great photos of the North Bend snopack Ogress. I don't know if I'm doing this posting stuff quite right but here goes. This is my brothers home between Marysville and Kayak Pt. WA https://www.backyardchickens.com/gallery/image/view/id/4907567/album/6152198 ZoiChick who lives an hour north of Sacramento. and an hour and a half over the "hill" from Reno.

The DW (Rikke) has a "Magnolia grandiflora" growing in the front rose garden. I'm impressed it even survives this far north.

There's a miniature M.Grandiflora developed by Briggs which has a constitution of iron; miniature in the sense that it's not the 60X60 of the species. It's all over town in Oly, notably in the parking lot of the Briggs branch of the YMCA, on the corner of the original nursery (they've since moved out to Porter).

Is that the 'Little Gem'? I had it in Federal Way. Frozen rain/or heavy wet snow broke it repeatedly.

No, this is a newer variety, and I can't remember the name at all. The ones in the Lacey Forest Center planting (near Fred Meyer's, remind me to show you some day) survived the 1996 ice storm with no breakage, and I didn't see any breaks Saturday, either. That was the first big public planting, and I think Briggs donated the trees and wrote it off for testing. I love that group, because it's dependably revenant at Labor Day.

awesome! I am hoping ours really gets happy this year! It's only about 12' - 14' tall at this point.

What Mr H wants is the Magnolia macrophyla, Big leaf magnolia. There are a couple in my neighborhood. They have enormous leaves with silvery undersides, and humongous flowers. It is deciduous.

Isn't there one at the Haller Lake Community club, no, wait, that's the curling place- the other Haller Lake Club that's actually by the lake? There used to be a big one at the west gate of the Medicinal Plant Garden but they took it out when they put up the new Chem building.

What I want is the Magnolia campbellii trees that grow outside the Huntington Library; of course they need Zone 10, so forget that. GORGEOUS huge(80 X 100) black-barked trees with soft orchid-pink blooms on bare branches in the dark of the year. If I remember right Mr. Huntington had them shipped from China as adult trees: the only cargo in a big clipper ship, attended by a team of horticulturalists. It's good to be rich (and then die and leave your goodies for mere peons to look at: I do so love the Huntington).

For our pans (we have 11) we use Lodge cast iron, For our peg legged dutch ovens we have 1 Lodge, 2 Cabelas and 1 Camp Chef. We use the Cabelas dutch ovens the most. The Lodge dutch oven I only use when my sister is over for dinner its gluten free.

Good idea.
I have used all mine with wheat products years ago, but have since ground them out & reseasoned them so all are GF now.

I have a question. I have a gorgeous Welsummer cockerel (8+ months, NOT hatchery stock) who is aggressive towards me. He's ok if I carry a stick into the pen. :) I am keeping the pullets as they are excellent layers and I love the dark spotted eggs. I have no plans anymore to raise Wellies. I don't need him. Is it worth it to try and rehome him - yes I would say he's aggressive - or should I just plan on having him for dinner next Sunday? My vote is for dinner but he might be an excellent protector and daddy if
he was free ranging.

This is a picture of him. That's not white on his feathers. It's a flash reflection.

Hey CL are you on APN site?

HUH?
No, I just get outraged every so often when some of this political/government poop comes up that we have to ask permission to protect our family & property?
From a grizzly Bear?
Are they insane ?
What on earth was that man supposed to do?
Let the bear eat all his livestock and his family?
call the "authorites" and sit & waite?

He was way way way out in the wilderness...he had no time to waite & made his choice to protect what was his, and now he gets fined & 2 years in prison ?
THAT makes me VERY angry!!
Ok I'll shut up now, and what is APN ???

I would say, have him for dinner. But then again, I have not had breakfast yet.

It's nonsense to keep a roo that carries a pissy attitude.

We are having a Thanksgiving-like dinner here tonight.
I bought one of those jenny-O turkey roasts that are frozen in a aluminum pan.
Then I am making pumpkin custard (in a pyrex rather than crust), cranberry sauce, smash-a-taters, giblet gravy (was in the freezer from November) Yams....and all we need now is the green bean casserole

I am not terribly fond of the GBC..though DH is, and being that Campbell's Cream of Shroomy Soup has wheat in it, he ain't getting no GBC !!!!!!!

He will have to settle for home grown GB's from our garden instead !

Pumpkin pie custard cooking in the oven smells yummy in here !
