Well dang. I haven't posted very often and joined awhile ago. I wanted a few chickens just to have something to do and maybe an egg or two in the process. Found this forum very interesting and informative.
But....................Yesterday I pulled the trigger and bought 8 rhode island reds. (went to get buff orpingtons but the reds just looked better, more active). Cute little girls I have to admit. Anyway I have them in a little pen with the heat light, etc. Worried about them last night but it was useless worrying. They did fine and today with the warm weather here in Rochester they were very perky.
I'll post some pics asap, that is if I can find the dang camera and get it charged up.
Yes, my first go at raising chickens. Got books, went to the library and purused this forum for info. Now I just have to narrow down the coop I intend to build for my "girls".
Wish me luck.

I made an emergency incubator out of a cooler and a lamp with a 60 watt bulb. and put a small container of water. At 3 this morning when I candled they still had red veins and I saw one actually move.

Just candled one and it moved.

I don't know how old it is though...

ROCHESTER ! ! ! That's right in my back yard. Will be watching to see if he gets some cool breeds worthy of a midnight shopping trip. Sorry folks but while LF RIR are ok and very popular as layers. They are just not my bag. Speaking of my 5 B RIR fuzzy butts seem to be doing fine. Now to manage to get the silkiebator away from them so we can "hand raise" em.

Good morning peeps.

I have a quick question. My RIR pullets are 6 1/2 weeks old. Are they old enough to go outside. I have a separate coop from the hen house. Its the kind that looks like a rabbit hutch. They wont be able to have a heat lamp or anything. SO I am just wondering if it would be to cold for them at night still... Of course they would have hay and there is 4 of them... I just dont wanna put them out to soon but they are getting cramped in the brooder. Thanks Bunches ~Kristina~

Why take them away? I always let mama raise them and just am sure to get my hands into things every evening by handling each chick (and older bird for that matter) every evening. The best of both worlds - very strong and knowledgable chicks and friendly too!

Ok everyone, anyone.

My goose Molly, needs a home. She has desperately been trying to mate with a little female duck, so I think she needs a gander for her own. She had one last year and they were great together, but he went hostile to the ducklings so we had to get rid of him.

She is a Tufted Roman, from Holderreads' Waterfowl Farm & Preservation Center, and is going to be 2 in June.

This is what she looks like (Picture Copyright HWF)
