On the fence thing; I would go with a solid 6ft woods fence with a hot wire on the top. Sooner or later the 2 dogs will be playing at your house Dana. The kinds breeds of dogs that your neighbor's have are going to kill a chicken given a chance, and without training it is only a matter of time before they do. Once the dog knows that there is a chicken to kill, the Pit bull mix isn't going to forget that the birds are just over that fence.

Two untrained dogs in a yard will have a tendency to act as a pack of feral dogs. They can become unpredictable. I have met Pit, Dalmatian, and labs that I have really liked, but without proper training and supervision these dogs can be a nightmare in the works.

I would clip at least one wing of each of your flock, and then watch them to see what they will do. You at least have a little time given that the dogs are still puppies. It is also okay to keep the chickens penned in their coop and run if it's large enough.

I too am finding that the chickens are harder on the back yard during this time of year. I have been limiting their free time. Of course I do have a great big chicken chasing puppy at my house.

All good suggestions JB. I have a lot of things to consider, plan, do in the very near future. Thank goodness that keeping them in their roofed run is an option in the meantime.
BTW - How is Jet settling in?

JB- This has been bugging me. What is in your avatar pic? My eyes are fuzzy... is it a bouvier? Or did I just insult your kids?

thats funny I am having pork steaks and some chicken stock rice lol

My dear little puppy is often a bit of a lunatic. He act much younger than I thought he would. I should have known better. I was told that Black Russian Terriers often take longer than other breeds of dogs to mature. Even though he is only about a year old, he could still grow more. I am praying that he doesn't end up being 150 lbs dog. A few of these guys can get into that range. Right now he is just under 70 lbs.

He has had more training than I thought he would have had at this point. All I really know is that the people that surrendered Jet at the shelter were known drug users, and they were his second owners. Jet seems like he may have been beaten at some point. He knows to roll over and be semi submissive. He really doesn't want to be submissive. At least I know that a dog like this needs a firm, but very fair hand, when he is being taught what I want him to learn. I may still need more professional training for both of us. It may be hard for me to find someone that understands this breed, and knows a lot more than I do about training dogs. I looked into Petco's training program, and I wasn't impressed with the young employees that have been promoted to the company's dog trainer positions. My DD knows a trainer in Seattle that may fit for exactly for what I need. 5

It has been a big adjustment to live with a big puppy again. I know that we had gotten spoiled with Puppy. I don't think any of us really understood how old he had gotten.

Jet reminds bot DH and I of a number of dogs that we have had in our lives over the years. He reminds me of the best dog we ever had Miss Berber, and of a dog that chose to live with my family when I was teenager. Jet has so many breed traits, from a many of the dogs that were bred to create the BRT breed. He even reminds me at times of Nala the Great Dane puppy. We are also under going culture shock with all the black dog hair. I am frequently reminded why a dog with dreadlocks was a good choice for our family.

My avatar is a picture of Jet. He was trying to make sure that DH wasn't doing something fun. We have learned that a well time squirt bottle of water works amazingly well. In fact it works on the nasty little dogs really well too. lol I still have a feeling that Jet will end up being as good of a dog as Miss Berber was.

He does still want to chase chickens, but he has been learning that the baby chicks are something that we love and take care of. Jet also want to play with the nasty little puppies. It is kind of scary watching him play with the tiny puppies. Jet doesn't seem to completely understand that he is so much bigger than the other puppies. I think this morning that he was asking Miss Gabby to be his mommy too. He was certainly talking to her. He does talk a lot, but doesn't seem to bark much.

So, 10 days ago Srucon brought me 3 doz eggs to set, and I did, along with 3 doz of mine.
Then today Srucon brought me 4 doz eggs to set which I will set with 2 doz Jersey Giants, 1 doz Marans, and 2 doz OEs......................
So.......the first hatch is about 6 doz (I candled) and this next set is 8 doz..so DH hooked up another hatching bator I have not used since last year................................IMAGINE 8 doz chicks !!!!!!!!!!!!!
barnie.gif

My wee cabin barn will have TUBS of babies everywhere !
To make matters thus more interesting, all of Srucon's eggs are individual pairing with various cocks.
So all 4 doz are different and each doz requires a hatching basket (and it's own zip code) and leg spiral band !!!!!!!!

I told her, after this, NO MORE !!! That is, if I do not go INSANE FIRST !!!!!!!!!!

Oh love ya Srucon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems that I have table clothes. I have a very long green one, and i think that there may still be a plastic one from the December show. I also have plenty of plates and silverware. Most of it is left over from previous shows. I will double check on all of it tonight. I need to get started on cooking a few things. I will also have a very large cooler. I do have about a half of a case of bottled water from the Dec show. I will bring the coffee maker, microwave, and an extension cord. I have a folding card table. I will check and see if there will be enough room in the car.
