It looks like I'm going to have to give Mona the Araucana a bath. She's got a build up of poo on her butt. I don't know why - I would think with no tail feathers or fluff to get in the way she could deposit her poo pretty cleanly, but this seems not to be the case.

I just looked up bathing your chickens. I've heard folks use the 3 tub method before, washing with baby shampoo or poultry shampoo in the first tub, rinse in the second in plain water, and water and vinegar in the third. Then blow dry. Of course the sun is gone today so I won't be putting her back outside right away. I've got a small dog crate she can stay in until I'm sure she's completely dry.

Does this sound right? Ugh, not really looking forward to this and I don't have a helper today so I hope Mona doesn't freak too much.

Nope not at all, I am saying that some people (not anyone here of course!) get them because they are medium size, and think they can toss them out in the back yard, don't socialize them, and never give them a job. THEN they become insane, biting, neurotic freaks. Not the dog's fault, the owner's fault.

You must be thinking about boxers or labs !

Nope she's definitely talking about herding dogs!! Heelers, Aussies, and border collies are notorious for massive destruction is they don't "have a job"
There are some exceptions but, not many, used to see it all the time here in Cow country, believe it or not!!
But, I have known boxers to be just as destructive when not socialized enough they tend to get separation anxiety! Just glad your guy's dogs are well behaved! It's a testament to the type of owners you are! Kudos!

Well, I was not happy with the incubator from the co-op for the classroom setting - it would have been too easy for the kids to disturb things and not be able to see as well.
So I jumped on the chance to get Hallerlakes incubator; and came home with it and seven eggs

It's warmed up and the seven eggs went in this evening!

So; for the test hatch we have (correct me if I'm wrong please - I should have taken notes!)

4 brabanters
1 brabanter/ black copper maran cross
1 brabanter/spitz cross
1 brabanter/EE cross

I'll post pictures later :) Please wish me luck with my first incubator hatch!

I sent lesson plans over to the teacher and I think she's ordering the "ovascope" as it will plug into her webcam and she candle in front of the class! How cool would that be!

Good Luck!! It's a lot of fun!!

What fun for you and the kids! Will you be keeping all the chicks hatched then?

We'll keep at least a couple from the test run =) We'll also be doing another hatch in class...hoping someone would like some hatched - if not - how terrible would it be to hatch meaties? LOL

Sorry to hear - this happens with our EE that is rumpless...not sure why but I bathe her about every two weeks since she was a chick. That is the only reason I still have her...couldn't sell a chicken that needs to be bathed every other week - and she's too sweet to put in the stewpot. I don't do any method other than to stick her in the tub and use the spray hose to get the poo off...then bleach the tub out quick before the husband gets home LOL I must love my chickens...cause bathing her is nasty business!

I had to toss all but 2 silkie eggs from my bator. Last night was day 10 and they were clear. I guess the rooster is lacking on his job. The 2 silkie eggs are just a dancing in their eggs.

So far there are still 8 cockoo Marans egg under the broody. I have not candled them.

Haller, I am so sorry about the illness, I have never heard of it! My heart goes out to you!

Speaking of candling, I candled the eggs I had gotten over the show weekend today. Here is what remains
Of the 12 Buckeyes, I would have had 12 out of 12 but, some how when I laid one of the eggs back in the box I used to carry them in it cracked!!

It was fertile!!! I opened it up to see and yes there was a little chick 6 days old!!

Out of 9 B RIR's I have 6 and out of 12 B AM's I have 8

So, that is whats left in the bator, and God Willn and the crick don't rise that's what'll hatch!!

This is in the bator I bought it's like the LG only I put the fan in it.
Well, it was super nice this am, but about an hour ago, the wind came up!!!

Never seems to fail! Hope everyone is doing better than me!!
Better go clean something before I get too depressed!!

I have heard of people putting wax on the crack and still hatch a chick out of it.
