Have my wonderful Wheaten and need the coop finished so they can have a nice place to live. Its going to look like a childs play house so cute. My oldest son said Im sick, I told him I wanted to paint the coops so they are cute when eveyone comes to the house it looks like a childs play land.
Do yesterday took my youngest son to get his drivers permit and he got it. Now the fun starts trying to show him how to drive. He's 19 so he doesnt have to go to Drivers Ed. He doesnt even want to drive but he needs one for a job thats for sure..

So I have some Black Copper Marans Pullets looking for new homes, I put a add on Craigs list today.. if they go than I can get the chicks out of my house, which smells like a barn

.
Figure I can have friends over for game night if I can get the smell out.. I know if they are good friends they wont care, well the guy thinks animals are for outside. And I agree with it when it comes to the chicks. lol..

Hi,
Our eggs are very dark and I candle them when they are at day 18, when we go into lock down I candle them and can tell. ( my husband had made me a great candler also for this) We have had a very good hatch rate with ours and so have others.

The olive egger are a cross with our Blue Ameracaunas hens and our Black Copper Marans Rooster, the next gen. should have nice olive colored eggs..
Oh my the way my husband went to school at Nelson. Also he works at the PO right there on 116th (I think thats the road) Small world..

Oh so sad !
I had the same kind of thing happen a month ago with a faulty thermometer/hygrometer and a slow hatch !!!
darn it !
I am starting to think that heavy worm infestations can do alot more internal injuries than we know of, such as they bore right into the liver, lungs and go through the inntestinal walls...I am going to get some wazine ASAP...do you think the wazine itself may have been too strong for your birds ?
In other words like dogs with heavy infestations of heart worms, if you worm the dog 100% it kills off all the worms at once and can cause mortality in that all the dead worms can clog up the heart valves and arteries, and those dead inside vital organs must be resorped by the immunal system, killing them all at once is too much...with dogs, they get a heart worm test, and are given a little wormer at a time, so to kill off a little worms everyday so the dog can heal and resorp the dead parasites.
Does that sound like what may be happening as you worm the birds, the next day they die ???

No none of my birds have died since I wormed them. Tomorrow I am going to give them Ivermectin. I will have to let you know how that goes. A number of my birds started to lay after I wormed them 2 weeks ago.

Please PM me so to make sure I see your post !
I am going to get Wazine probably today~

You are so sweet. I haven't caught him yet I haven't seen him since Wed. night. I don't know if that is because of the rain or the shots my friend fired at him. LOL you have some strong opinions on cats. I don't feel the same I love cats, so much that I would love to be a cat groomer. I have 5 that live in my house and we have at least 10 ferrals that we fixed in december and kept on the property. they have never gone near my chickens, I evenb have all my quail in my kitchen in cages on the floor and my cats don't think anything of them. We keep them all well fed lol.

Congrats on the new puppy! He is adorable, and so neat you have been with your hubby your whole life, what a great story!

Thanks, I do not hate cats, just some.
I have kept several cats all my life.
It just p's me off how people dump their animals and these creatures are true feral, like small bobcats, they have to hunt to eat, and pissing all over our home, yard, patio, cars, garden, etc really p's me off.
It stinks !
You can hardly ever get it off !
Indoor cats, our pets, are a totally different animals, like the difference between wolves and our pet dogs, our pet dogs have evey capability to kill and eat our livestock, but do not have to.
I really get upset that people dump their animals, and do not spay or nueter, they do not immunize so parvo and other disease run rampant, and dumping an animal off to fend for itself only makes it want to eat your livestock, an easy target.
All due to lazy, irresponsible humans.

My husband and I did meat birds this year. We didn't do as many as I thought we were going to do. I am rather relieved that it worked out the way it did. I had a number of people that wanted chicken meat. But I found that I am not able to care for more than about 15 birds at a time. I did about 28 this year.
I have figured out the cost to produce a bird, and without considering my time is at least 10.00 to 12.00 per bird. If I take my time into the equation, and I consider that my time is only worth minimum wage. Then I would need to ask almost 20.00 per bird. I am thinking that this would price the end result out of the realm of affordable or reasonable. On the other hand I am interested in knowing if there is a market for meat chickens. I think that if I had better set up to care for that many birds, that next time I would find the process easier to manage by myself. If I have to DH help me much then I pay a bigger price for all the hassle.
P.S. I ended up de-boning all of the meat that I kept. I find that it is much easier to use that way. I kept all the bones in order to make stock during the year. I also packaged the wings in packs i in order to make hot wings on the grill. I am just waiting for the weather to warm and dry up. I also vacuumed packed all of the meat I put in my freezer.
I hurt a lot more for days after we put the birds into the freezer. It’s just too many hours of standing on my feet. I want new feet that don’t hurt. Sometimes I think it would hurt less if I just had them cut off.

Oh NO ! Don't say that !
I raise/raised California Meat rabbits, but for our own use.
They are more expensive to feed than chickens, and grow slower than the genetically engineered Cornish Cross, for example.
A 50# sack of alfalfa pellets never under $16 on sale, and scratch and meat bird starter is cheaper and often on sale.

It is also a bummer to butcher rabbits, having those big pink eyes, and they are furry, soft and scared...it is hard to do them in.
Not many people can do it.
It is also messy and you need govt' inspections, a special butcher shop and a license with frequent inspections to sell to the public.
It may be that you need to raise your own.
I have seen local big farms that have chicken and beef for sale, will look for links for you~

I'm right there with you. I'm ready for some dry days, and a little sun wouldn't hurt either!

That is one cute pup. He looks really smart. A girlfriend and I debated one time about the value of a smart verses a dumb dog and that maybe sometimes a dumb dog is easier to live with than a smart dog. I don't think I have made a conclusion to that idea yet. But then I have a dog that will talk back at me, and ignore me if he wants too. Sometimes I wish he was not quite so smart with his mouth.
I am real glad that you were able to give that Jack a great home. Are there other litter mates still at the pound?

OK Big Dog say he needs me to go to bed NOW!!! goodnight all

There were several other pups at the Grants County Humane Society when we went to get Jack...out of eight, 4 were still there and those were his same size and shape but had a aussie-shepard/german shepard coloration to them, more like their mommie.
I guess due to dark colorations being predominate.
He is awesome, and already talking back !
Mostly he sleeps, for an hour, then runs and plays for 15 minutes, then drops and sleeps again.
He slept all night llast night until 5 Am
big_smile.png
then goes potty outside (we usher him out every 20 minutes) and heis getting all OK but still loves to grab and chew rocks !!!

Do not know where you are, but I have 16 PBR pullets, and 2 PBR roos that we got from the feed store on April 4th, for my brother who said he wanted chickens, then said he was not ready (mentally) and then he was going to build a coop, then got distracted !!!!!!!!!!
Meanwhile these girls need a alot of room...so I will be willing to sell some off if anyone is interested, or take to the farmers market soon....I love their big brown eggs, often double yolkers.
Let me know, not sure how far it would be to you...

Wow that is really neat that that pony would do that!

I just got back up from feeding my babies...... Had an odd feeling that woke me up and told me to go down to my coops and feed... Lucky I did! The heat lamp where my RIR and FBCM had fallen into the shavings (Lord knows how!) and was smoldering!!!!! I was able to put out the embers that had started and no one was hurt!!!! SEE! MY LUCK IS CHANGING FOR THE GOOD!

I think it is time something gives and we all get a better strain of luck....

Hang it with a wire, like a clothes hanger wire and fold it over so the lamp cannot be knocked off !
Tie wraps help hold it too !
Good thing you checked !
