Wow that is really neat that that pony would do that!

I just got back up from feeding my babies...... Had an odd feeling that woke me up and told me to go down to my coops and feed... Lucky I did! The heat lamp where my RIR and FBCM had fallen into the shavings (Lord knows how!) and was smoldering!!!!! I was able to put out the embers that had started and no one was hurt!!!! SEE! MY LUCK IS CHANGING FOR THE GOOD!

I think it is time something gives and we all get a better strain of luck....

I want to get Wazine and worm my flock, and also vaccinate for Mareks on the birds that have not been.
I heard that the shot, given under the skin, make a small bubble, and then later the birds can act very sick, almost to the point of appearing near to death from the live vaccine, is this true ?
Got some pointers here ?
And do I give the same small under-the-skin bubble to all, chicks, pullets and mature chickens as well ?
Next Q: Wazine and Mareks at the same time be too much ?

I have had no ill effects from the Marek's vaccine. Mind you, the fowl pox vaccine is another story- weak birds may become ill after that one. You give the same 0.2cc dose to a chick or an adult- vaccine theory is not weight- dependent. Seems weird, I know. I have not tried vaccinating and deworming at the same time. I probably would not do it with my more inbred birds, but would do it with my free-rangers. I am writing an article on small-flock vaccination- may post it.

I really do hope that all of our luck changes. It seems to have been a rough ending to May... The weathers been crappy, people have hed bad hatches, predators... The list goes on. I am really proud of our pony, even though he's a pain in my butt at times.

I'm SO glad that you got up and checked on your babies... What a tragedy that could have been. I'm glad no one was hurt. I'm always a bit paraniod about leaving heat lamps on in the coop, for this exact reason. I think my biggest fear is a fire that isnt caught in time. So much can be damaged or lost in a fire, and its not something I ever want to go through again.

Ya, at first I thought it was me, then I noticed how bad everyone else has had it.....must be something in the water? lol Hopefully June ends up much better for us all!

I wish I had somewhere else to put my juveniles that still need the heat! maybe I can figure out another heat source? My BF keeps telling me not to leave it on because "since when do we need to heat chickens? Are you telling me even 50 years ago farmers kept a fire going for them or something?" He has a good point and I know the points for why I SHOULD keep them warm, just thinking about weighing the consequences now lol.

How old are your babies? I have three aprox. 1 month old chicks, and they are outside without a heat lamp. But they are also just about copletely feathered. They still have a little fluff around their vents, and necks.

One question. Do you know if Barred Rocks have gray legs and feet? One lf my chicks is supposed to be a barred rock, but it looks like she has a beard and muff, pluss the feet are gray. I thought B.R.s had yellow feet. I will try to post some pictures to get some oppinions. "sp?"

Ive been up for WAY to long already...

there are 4 that are about 3 weeks, the others I believe are a month but none of them have all of their feathers yet. I have a room that I am converting for the day olds to go into.....maybe I should just make it into sections for all my birds that still need heat!

This is the supossed Barred Rock... Tell me what you all think please?

Here are my three babies. Do you think its just baby fluff coming off the barred rock? Or is that the start to tufts, and a possible beared?

Any ideas as to what the little white speckled one might be?

Thats what I would do. Section off the space you have for your day olds, and stick your babies that need heat in there. Then you shouldnt have anymore close calls in the coop... If they are close to a month, then I would think depending on the breed, that they should be close to feathered out.

Chickielady
Hi,
The eggs will hatch olive eggers, sorry . I'll try and get a picture of them for you. The parents are Blue Ameracucnas and BCM rooster.
Oh let me tell you pyr can go any place, they dig and they can climb and when our girls gets out. (three times in 4 years) we have to drive for miles to find her. Why you ask she follows her nose and she doesnt care where it leads her..

The one girl said oh you can have her shes been with a skunk!! My poor son picked her up yes hes my strong boy and put her in the back of the truck. We said sorry and what can we do for you they said nothing so we left.. I sure hope she didnt touch anything in the house...

I'm a newby so take my opinion lightly but I think she's a barred rock. I have one myself and she looks just like yours, minus the white fluff around the face. That is probably just baby fluff that should go away soon. The legs on the barred rocks are yellow with gray down the fronts from what I understand and that's what the legs of mine look like. I suppose she could have been crossed with something else though depending on where you got her. Cute birds.
