I need to get our coop and run done as well so I can get them in it. Mine stay in the house. We are no longer using a light, they aer 4 weeks but they seem to be doing just fine, so I decided to nix the light.. Good luck!!!!!

It's fun to watch them play outside, isn't it? I can't wait to stop using the light. Mine are 4 weeks tomorrow. They stay in the garage where it is cooler, so I may have to continue using it for a bit.

The enumclaw games are our yearly camping trip. Up forest road 70 above greenwater. I love it!!!

The Enumclaw highland games are awesome! Being of Scottish decent, I love to go so I can teach my kids about their heritage.

We're going to have them in a protected run...... We have cats & there's other cats in the area. Plus a neighbors dog that he cant control for the life of him... so we definately dont plan on having them free range...

So far they're getting their back feathers, minus a couple are still in process of that.. but i'm guessing by 6/7 weeks they should be feathered enough to let them out for a bit... plus if can wiggle it, with their shed.. there will be a opening that they can still run in if they feel threatened..

I was wondering if 6/7 weeks works for Motherless babies...

Thank You for the reply =)

Mine will be 4 weeks tomorrow. They play outside in a greenhouse about 4-5 hours each day. They love it, as long as the temp in the greenhouse stays above 75. When it drops to 70, they huddle (or, we like to call "pyramid" because one always seems to stand on top of the other two). Because they still huddle at 70 degrees, we know they're not ready to play outside in the real backyard.

Ok here is a quick question for you all about washing eggs. Hubby and I have a little disagreement over this... He argues that eggs need to be washed before putting in the fridge otherwise they will keep growing inside the egg and then there will be blood spots on the yolk. I say putting them in the fridge stops all growth and that the eggs already had blood spots on them from when the egg developed in the chicken.

I grew up where we didn't wash the eggs at all unless they were really dirty... Mom never washed them except for that. And she cooked them all the time straight from the shell without washing the shell. Help???

We do agree on not washing them if they are to go into the incubator.

Any thoughts on this subject? Anyone at all?

I read a book and it said if you wash them they won't be fresh as long. But, what do I know, I'm only book learned. I have seen soap for washing eggs at Del's. Not sure what the ingredients are, or if it will protect them from having that coating washed off.

Be ok! It's not exactly the same but, you get my drift!
Hey, I understand Julie...I know that real estate prices went out of control because of the influx of people who could drop ridiculous amounts of money on land and homes, and there are some Californians (or insert people from anywhere) that are narrow minded, inconsiderate buttheads that make me wish we could spay and neuter humans. I just hate it when folks start treating me differently only when they find out where I'm from. Like Ogress was saying about the gas attendant, they go from friendly to instant rude and nasty. I'm glad you are not like that, and we can have an intelligent adult discussion here.

Besides, who else would understand spray painting a blue M on the back of a Buckeye, and like to rock out to Def Leppard?!

There are people who think the only place in Washington is Seattle, just as the only places in California are LA, San Diego or San Francisco, or Manhattan the only place in New York, etc. I happen to like the quote in your sig about travel being fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and so on.

Yes and again, CA was doing it too! And yes you are right, but, there are a lot of buttheads from a lot of places for sure!! I seriously have to go and buy a M cut out!! LOL, I wonder what kind of paint or what not I can get that is nontoxic to birds??? CL any suggestions?? I'm doin it!!

Oh and thanks about the new signature, I have had a few comments on it, I actually borrowed that from a travel guy on PBS ( we don't have satilite anymore)
And I have personally found this to be true, ( as we have been discussing CA and other states) I have traveled over half the world, ( pacific ocean ect) and have learned to love many cultures!

The WSDA says that you should wash your eggs before you put them in the fridge so as not to contaminate other food in the fridge (salmonella, contamination through the air blowing around inside the fridge), important if you are selling off farm! We have a barn fridge just for eggs, vet supplies, and sealed containers. We do not wash eggs until we are ready to sell them as you would be washing off the natural protective layer that the hen provides (this is why we try not to wash incubator eggs). Our farm fresh eggs are not washed (also charge a little less). The blood/meat spots are in the eggs when the shell is formed. They are "floaters" in the hen's body and sometimes get in the eggs. If your eggs are fertilized, refrigeration at 41 degrees (WSDA/USDA for safe cold food holding) or less than 60 degrees, will stop chick growth or cell division. Hope that helps, you WIN!

Well hello fellow neighbors! I live in Spokane Valley, Wa. I am a new chick mom to 6 Barred Rocks and I am new to the whole chicken thing but I am soo excited! we got them less than a week ago and they are 2 weeks old and growing so fast! I am so excited for this new adventure.

Well, I guess if you haven't had the experience's that some of us have had, then you wouldn't understand the attitude, I lived in CA for 8 years I met some great people there, and like other places I have live there were jerks there too! Especially if you were in the Navy! Prime example of nastyness is what happened in VA...they used to have signs up that said Dogs and Sailors stay off the grass!! Now I tell you do you think that ALL sailors ran over and trashed peoples lawns?? I think not! But, CA had attitudes against them as do some of the East coast. Look, CR has lived here all of his life too, and he has seen it, I really don't think he meant to hurt anyone here, he was just funnin, he knows a good peep when he see's one! And he is usually the first to welcome anyone to this thread, Washingtonian or not!

Surprisingly, the Phoenix area has some animal friendly neighborhoods. there are lots of homes with an acre or less in town with horses and anything else allowed. When I first moved there I was surprised to see a flock of sheep in a front yard. There's a swath of land running east to west from Scottsdale, thru Phoenix and over to Glendale that allows animals. And many other areas with horses. that's why I was so freaked at not being able to have animals way up in the boonies with a fenced acre. The lady that complained didn't even live next door. She was behind and over a couple of acres. She even brought us a copy of the covenants from the 1970's or so. They were never filed or instated. She was a major pain in the a** .

Yes I do remember seeing lots of little horse property's in that area! Lot's of Arab ranches too!

Treated the girls to half a cup of air popped popcorn today and they went nuts! Super cute stuff going on, I love the chase!

So...I just realized I need some more info on deep littering my girls. I have been adding shavings every few days to cover over the poop and make a new layer but didn't realize I needed to stir it until I kinda fell on some info somewhere else. The coop has been just a little stinky (NO ammonia, just slightly poo smelling) the last few days and I thought "deep litter isn't supposed to stink like this so soon!" so I'm glad I read that. I took the rake out there and literally raked it all into a big pile in the middle then spread it back out again and I can't believe how compressed it had gotten. Now the girls have a very stink-free fluffy coop again. What else do I need to know about deep litter?

It's on a dirt floor right?? and do you have leaks at all with water getting to it?? I deep litter too and don't have much of a problem unless I have a leaks some where, and moisture gets in other than that I'm good to go!
