Man when I was 16 that's all I wanted to do is drive truck!! I have driven some in the Navy, not the semi's but pretty close! I love to drive and the longer the trip the better!
I pounded the hyways for 23 years. The last 16 I took the newbies out on the road and trained them (tried to at least) in the finer points of truckin'. It was amazing to me that all you have to do is pick up the load on time and deliver it on time and you are a hero to the shipper and receiver. It really is that simple. Unfortunately if you can't self-start, and can't manage your time/schedule you will fail and fail again.
Every new driver I trained believed they could avg 60 mph or better. They found out quite rudely, I may add, that to avg 54 mph you had to bust your butt and your concentration had to be 100% on the job at hand.
I concentrated on safety and gave them the tools they needed to succeed. Few did.
It's a very tough life, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted. I was retired 6 years the 4th of May. Enjoying every **** minute of it.
