Longshot question: anyone within an hour of Olympia have Marek's vaccine and a tiny syringe or know where to buy it? We have four newly hatched chicks and are having a hard time getting it. I guess I should have planned for this, but it's our first hatch ever and I thought it would be easier to acquire from a poultry vet. We are going to try calling the state vet on Monday if nothing else pans out... I've called about every feed store and vet in the area to no avail, but if you know of someone that sells it, let me know. Thanks in advance, chicken pals.

We are up at O'dark thirty to head to a Horse show in the morning. This afternoon, I have convinced a group of friends to help my move another friends chicken coop to my house. I hope to use it to separate out some breeding chickens from my hodge podge layer flock.

The weather should be great!

I've got seven chicks now, and set more eggs than I'd remembered. I need to set up the clean nest box and an exit ramp and chick feeders and water, but the day was a bit more annoying than usual as I'd screwed up last night and had to ask DD to put the sheep in, and she used the winter procedure, which entails letting him off the lead and letting him go bounce like a superball all the way back to his alfalfa feeder; with green grass everywhere that doesn't actually work very well.

And my son is supposed to be here soon so we can go to the Prairie Appreciation Day, and then stop at Del's on the way home for Layena and a new chick feeder since I haven't had time/energy/moral vigor to get the old ones sterilized.

SSH chicks are very different than the EEs were- smaller, and shinier, somehow?

Thanks CL Im missing my Mama the 19th of April I lost her than the 7th of May would have been her birthday. I thought I got by with out getting to upset. But NO now its Mothers day and all I can do it think about her and how much I miss her.. She was a great lady!

I know there is alot of us on here missing our Mother's !!

Actually it answers a bunch of questions, starting with "are my Hamburgs fertile? Did I handle the eggs correctly?"
But: BABIES! and more eggs pipped!

Got DD off to Florence this morning. Because her flight left so early we decided to spend the night at the Red Lion across from the airport so she could hop their complimentary shuttle at 4 AM. I went back to our room and waited until I knew she was safely on her way. She should be approaching Paris soon for a 2 hour layover and then arrive in Florence a couple of hours after that. I'm very excited for her and the wonderful opportunity to study Food and Wine of Italy, get a crash course in Italian and do an internship at the restaurant. The school is called Apicius and is a world renowned environment for hospitality students.

My parents will be meeting her there for a couple of days later this month so I'm glad to know they'll be able to check and see all is okay with her in a couple of weeks. She's already gotten her apartment assignment about 25 minutes walk from the school. Her apartment faces a Piazza with a beautiful fountain in the center, a church at one end and a cafe across the street. Such an adventure for her - and she's getting school credits!

I also had some sad news today - soon after I arrived home from Sea-Tac my gf called hysterical saying "Simon killed my chicks"! Simon is her silky terrier. Her 6 chicks, who were just over 3 weeks were out enjoying the sunshine in a sunny, penned area and that darn dog found a way to squirm through somehow. She eventually found 2 of the chicks who had escaped harm, and were hiding from her LF who were free ranging in the backyard. These were the 6 chicks I had incubated and hatched for her, including 5 wheaten Marans from zgoatlady and that single silver Ameraucana chick that I had hatched from the egg Jean gave me in Monroe. I am heartsick - she was my little miracle chick and my gf's favorite. Thank goodness one of the two that survived is a little wheaten Marans pullet.

My Silkie and Serama eggs are in lockdown.

Hoping for a good hatch - I've got 9 good Silkie eggs and 6 Seramas that were all looking good when I candled. Now I need to get seriously thinking about where to put them when they outgrow the brooder... I have wonderful plans for a great little Silky house that's low to the ground with a short ramp. I just need to find someone to build it for me! The Seramas will alternately be in the house and then the garage, (remember when some of us used to park cars in our garages?

). Of course on sunny days the Seramas will be outside in the covered X-pen for doses of Vitamin D.

I'm so excited for my own chickie babies I can hardly stand it. Missing my big girl DD chick, so these fluffy babies will have to be a suitable substitute for snuggles!

She has that look on her face like "You're not going to plaster my face all over the chicken forum again are you ????????"

Needs include: diapers, baby wipes, infant formula and baby food; canned meats, fruits, vegetables and soups; dry cereal and pasta. On Mother's Day ?

A bit of advice. If your dog happens to be a good hunter and bring in a mole. DO NOT leave the dog and said mole in the front yard while ya go in for dinner. And if by chance ya do and the mole goes to ground. No matter how fast you turn it or how hard you push A sewer snake will not screw into the mole. It will just cause the mole to kick dirt up in yer face. Plan B worked very well. 150 grains of lead injected from a 38 !!! Game over mister mole I WIN ! ! !

Today we started the remodel of the apartment in the stables. Talk about a little stress reliever. That's when ya get to freely lay that 32oz hammer through walls just to see whats behind the dry wall. However there was a bit of an incident. See I warned the guy I am working with that when he tore down the ceiling there would be bats and I would be on the floor and headed down the stairs. Sure enough here comes the bats. I was on the floor on my belly. Couldn't get to the stairs. And Robert is running around using a window screen trying to heard this bat out a window with out hurting it!

And bee careful ! No more accidents please !!!

It was great to see CL and DH again, and visit their place. Jack the dog is even handsomer in the fur, and her birds are magnificent. Saw one of the broody mamas with the now much larger babies. The Buckeye cockerel snatched my ice cream cone. Gary tried to get me to take more chickens but I resisted.

Miss Vulture is an Olive Egger that looks like a Cuckoo Marans with a pea comb, and has a red face. I will have to come up with a new name for her.

Was so nice to see you sweetie !

Will have to do a longer get together this summer, too much to talk about & so little time !

Go to Jeffers.com & buy it, and an ice pak & soft sided cooler, syringes & insulin needles.
When it arrives, do the shot.
You do not have to give the shot the very day they are hatched.
They just tell ya that because every day the chicks are hatched they can be exposed to the virus.
I have vaccinated adult birds, day olds, week olds & so on, all in the same day.
And, the vaccine only comes in 1000 doses.
IF you want to waite a week or so, you can bring your chicks here EARLY in the morning & I will shoot them for ya when I do my next vaccine.
Once mixed, the Marek's vaccine is only good for 1 hour, and must be chilled always (store in your refrig)
