Question for y'all: We have 13 pullets now...slight feeling there's another roo or two in there; we'll get rid of them if there are any. We are trying to make the run semi permanent and figuring out a size. Right now it's 6'x18', which is 108s/f. We will be using the run strictly as a temporary daily holding pen for the girls until my errands are done with for the day. They will free range our half acre backyard MOST of the time. Is that pen (which will be roofed and have food, water, roosts, etc in it) going to be OK size for my girls?

One more thing...do chickens wander and free-range when it's raining?

Its good to see you back, we have missed you..
Thanks. Glad to be human again!

Wow you've done a lot of work since I was out to visit. Your place looks great... The ONLY thing missing is a couple of white egg layers

Yes.

Depends on the bird I think. Mine are scared of the rain - but it is an unusual occurrence here.

Most my flock will take a little rain some way more then others!

Hey, BYC WA peeps!
Been a long time!
Life is starting to get back to normal. Radiation is over.
I had my final check on my skin today and things are healing up great!
I have a new level of sympathy for burn victims. Wowsa!
Sorry to anyone that needed an answer or info from me in the last couple of months.
I did not realize how zapped I was going get.
Now that I am coming out of it, I can see how bad it was.
My kids are grateful to have their mom back!
I still take naps but am feeling soooo much better.
On the chicken side of life, We are having to beat off the broodys with a stick.
We sold 3 chickens that we hatch last spring to a friend and 2 of them have shared a hatch!
Very cool, indeed!
There is no way I can get caught up on all the missed stuff, so I just want to say...

to the many new peeps!
Hope everyone is doing ok.

Yeah! I am glad your feeling better.

It is very hot!!! well that sounds like a REASONABLE amount!! LOL it won't take long for the chicken math to work!

We already had the chicken math and even the duck math too. lol. Now because of upcoming move, I am having to lower the numbers. Although my little red sex links are not big enough yet to be dinner. They were bought for that purpose so they get to grow up more before then. Guess that means: 7 more chickens to the math lol

So glad your radiation is over!

I have lots of broodies this year too. I wish I needed chicks, I'd let some hatch! Nothing sweeter than watching a mama hen. One of the Cuckoo marans from CL is the nicest broody, she never objects when I pull the eggs out from under her every day. The Barnevelder is a nice broody too, though she protests, and the buff orp is a mean thing just like last year. The big cochin can also be mean, but both bantam cochin hens are friendly.

It looks nice when it's green. Remember this is the desert, so in another month or two, anything I don't water will be brown. If I remember I'll take and post a pic in Aug and you'll see the difference.
Now I'm curious, I will have to go back and read missed posts - I want to see the dry side when it's green! What month do you turn brown?
