Just barely keeping up here. Too many things out of my control that are currently worrying or frustrating me. Then even though I can't control them I feel guilty wasting my time online...

I'm loving everyone's stories though - Aww... the Easter Egger Sexing Tips and Tricks thing was pretty funny. Reminds me of when my daughter found catnip in a margarine tub when she was in 5th or 6th grade and nearly had a nervous breakdown over it in school because she was sure her parents were stoners. Thank goodness my aunt was the principal of the school at the time. She had Lily calmed down pretty quickly. Poor kids.

14 chicks in the brooder still growing like crazy. I caught one of the 2 1/2 week old Seramas grabbing the other teeny tiny Serama cockerel by the neck and making the poor baby cry this morning. Darn boys, already playing boys games.

Quick question: I have a mother/daughter duo who are in the process of their first coop build. We recently did a long consult and they decided they were ready for their first flock. They're debating whether or not to insulate their coop. I told them I didn't think it was necessary in this area, (Tacoma, Lakewood). But I'm wondering how many of us do have insulated coops?

I'm lining mine with my leftover feed bags. Not really insulation, but it will at least keep the wind from coming through the cracks of my home-made coop. (It's not perfect, but I did it all myself!!)

I do have unplanned ventilation, though! On the count of that I have never built anything out of wood in my life. Who knew that when you buy a 2nd batch of 2x4s, you should probably check that the length matches the first batch? (so one wall is three inches higher than the other - INSTANT shed roof with ventilation triangles!!) Who knew that when you framed a door, that the doorframe length should INCLUDE the bottom plate 2x4, and not the end of the stud? (instant under-door ventilation!)......anyway, lessons learned. LOL!! Next stop-hardware cloth.

Some insulate, and some don't. I didn't at first, but then decided to put in that silver bubble type of insulation that they sell in rolls at Home Depot.
I got mine from Pet Smart though. They ship the fish to the store in the insulation bags and most stores will give it to you so it's free. Re-use & Recycle at it's best!

My girls never pick at it or try to eat it. I just use a staple gun and it works great!
I don't know that you need to insulate though, I think it is more of a choice.

Like others have said, ventilation is the most important thing. Ventilation not drafts.

People will be standing in line to get OUR free insulation and we'll have to go without

Good thing I have inside information (My DD) on when they come in

Ok, really this is just like the rolls they sell at Home Depot. the piece at P.S. is 25 1/2 " x 34" they are nice and are easy to staple to coop walls. They usually come in on Friday

My wyandotte hatched 2 chicks out of seven eggs last Saturday. she had trouble staying on the eggs, she liked to go socialize too much

Now my speckled sussex is broody

and I don't have any fertile eggs to put under her

Where's Tamara when Ya NEED her

Man! I wanted broody hens and none of them would oblige. You don't neccessarily want any and two of yours go broody one after another! Oh well, I have Tamara's Hova Bator Genesis! Works like a charm!

I have LOTS of fertile eggs, but they're all Sussex mixes, since Bob only has one fellow Sussex hen to work with. You're welcome to them if you want to make a ferry trip to Kingston.
