Ok not sure if anyone can answer this for me, but I can hope. Turkeys, I have a pair of Narragansett (I think) and I have not seen the tom "get to" the hen. But a guy that came and bought my rooster, hunts turkeys and said that mine boy is still a Jake, noting the very small almost not there beard. Also that they do not sexually mature until 3 yrs and a long beard. Does anyone know if this is true or not? I really don't want to keep this very sweet, nice, loving boy *sarcasm* for two or so more years.

DH is a turkey hunter. He said "in the wild" a Jake would not mate with a hen because of the pecking order. The top Tom would have that duty.

He told me to google to find out how young of a turkey can mate... it looks like a Jake as young as 10 or 11 months old can mate, if he is the only male turkey: http://www.turkeycountrymagazine.com/10JA/drtom.html

You should be able to do it but you will need to keep him separate from the flock for a month (?) If you have kids get a breed that is known to have good temperament. (silkie, Brahama, Orpingtons).

When I first read that a Brahma was docile and friendly, I thought that was crazy talk. How could a really big chicken be docile. It's true! My little girl Brahma has the absolute sweetest personality.

Thought it would be fun to share some pictures I took today of the girls. They simply LOVE my yard and I'm so happy to give them the run of the place! DH isn't quite there yet as he despises the chicken poop on the porch, but I hose it off every evening after they roost.

I scoop poop on a daily basis.

With only 3 chickens to clean up after, it's not too bad. It gives me peace of mind knowing that my children, who like to tumble in the grass, will have less chance of getting sick from chicken poop.

Wow! Your Martha could be my Caunnie's twin! Caunnie is fluffy like Martha now, too. Martha came from Reber... right? Yours are older, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had the same parents.

Took my dozen of 12 week old girls and added them into the run tonight from their apartment in the garage. Was thinking that introducing them to the older girls at night would be best.

but

It has been brought to my attention that it would have been best if I would have put them on the roost with the others.

So

I went back out to the run, and one by one started adding them to the roost, as I got to the 4th one, the 3rd on jumped off, I put her back up, and she jumped off as I was adding another, then that one jumped off, then they all jumped off and raced around like mad. Now this was about 11pm, so I am not sure what to do now. They are getting too big for the apartment [4' deep x 4' high x 8' long], I don't want to be losing the young ones to pissy older girls in the morning.

Am I just worried for no reason ?

0430 I went out, the girls I added in last night, were out and about in the run, peckin and generally just being early morning chickens, the older wiser girls were still in bed on the roost, ya know, it's raining, we're not going out there. I took out some scratch, some rolled oats, some bread, and spread it about the run, some of the older gals come out and pecked about, looked at the new ones and said, oh, your here, fine, i'm going back to bed.

So far so good!
