Lemon Cuckoo Orpington Project Rooster "Lemon" still not positive on male female but gets chased by the roosters and is very large. Not crowing yet.....

Roosters are free to BYC peeps.... please reserve now if you want one. I need them gone and will start processing the crowing ones tomorrow....

Last question, do you know her/his age?  I still can't shake how much she looks like a pullet, despite the suspicious feathering in the other picture.  Now I'm dying to figure it out.  My girls and I like hopping on the "What Breed/Gender is this?" forum and guess.

Hatched around the 1st march

I have 2 Lemon Cuckoo pullets. I was sure that one was a rooster as a 2week old because my Cream Legbar cockerel would challenge her when ever I put her back in the brooder. But, at 22 weeks, no crowing, small comb and docile personality and they are huge compared to the Cream Legbars, nearly twice the size. They same pullet now has stitches in her head cause they ripped into it. Maybe it's because she is much larger than they are and maybe they don't like yellow? No idea. She and her sister will be moving in with the big chickens after she recovers. Nice barring on your picture. One of mine looks like this and the other looks like a buff with no barring.

I'd love to have a lemon cuckoo hen in my flock for easter eggers.... might throw some pretty colors! but any chick I might want to keep always turns male on me :(

Chickielady - that tomato is awesome!

If I brought a roo to the auction (13 week old BCM/EE mix) how much could I expect to get for him? Just a few dollars? Don't know if it's worth it to bring him to auction or give him away for free ;) I just want him gone very soon; they're all getting expensive now that they eat so much!

When I run out of fresh meat for the dog I'm going back to the auction. Sometimes you can get roos for a buck a piece! (bunnies too sometimes) YUP! Our auction in Chehalis charges 10% (I think) OR a flat $10 to set up in the parking lot.

It depends on the time of year, what the weather is like, the buyers - whole ton of stuff. IF you have some nice, purebred boys (of a breed that is rare or particularly wanted), AND have a really pretty print out with pedigree etc, you will do much better.

I just cull my extras and eat them. The gas price alone doesn't make it worthwhile.

The current fancy bearded buff laced polish roo only attacks humans... if they turn their back.

My silly Barred Rock is the same way. The ding dong runs from dogs but attacks the people who feed them! Guido might be my first soup bird!

That's crazy!!! Though, I do put stock in using colloidal silver. Jeanine has been badly burned twice in her short life, poor thing! When she had just turned 2 she put her palms flat on our fireplace glass and burned the snot out of them; had to go to the hospital and the doctors sucked and didn't treat them very well; we used silver instead of the crap they gave us and she healed quickly and almost painlessly, after the first day of agony. Then just this last 4th of July a couple weeks ago she stood up and ran out of her chair on the lawn barefoot, right into the road where a firework had just stopped firing. There was still sparks on the ground and she was burned; the bottom of her foot had a blister the size of a quarter on it and now it's barely noticeable because of the silver. Oddly enough, when we just left it alone the blister would swell up and threaten to pop, but as soon as we applied the silver it would go back down to being flat and not so scary looking. Silver rocks!
Poor baby!!!!! We used silver sulfadiazine a lot at the veterinary clinic I worked at. IT IS AMAZING at healing wounds!!

Hey Totalcolour - here's a pic of two of the Anconas you hatched for me (the one of the left is the one your spouse named "Squish" - we still call him that).

they are going pretty cheap right now.

(I'm also quick to cull mean roosters and hens so that might be part of it)
I think I need to bite the bullet and do this myself with my BR roo. We have our matador moments and he will come at us when our backs are turned and I have been trying to snag him as often as possible when he's being a jerk. Once I have a good hold on his feet in a football hold he calms enough to pet. My 11yr old tried this once and he pecked her cheek. I should've used my anger to cull him right then and there!

Guess I wasn't thinking. WE use around 60 lbs of feed a DAY, so using it up goes pretty quick. I forgot, some people only have a few birds to feed. (We just bought a ton and a half! - that would be a big loss to us)

WOW! How many birds do you have? And, how, on earth, do you haul a ton and a half of feed? Hauling a 50 lb. bag out of the store and getting it in the van is enough of a chore. Then I get DH to haul it out of the van and to the back yard.

Harvey will be our first soup bird. Its kinda sad because he is a nice looking guy but there are too many nice Roosters out there for me to have to tip toe around the run because of an aggressive Rooster. I already have my sights set on 2 new Roos... just cant decide which one!
