make sure their is no galvinized or steel parts...use only stainless steele or plastic for bird watering systems.

Really? Why? Now I'm going to have to have DH look at what he used in the hose to put the system together. We used a washer hose, and I know there is a little metal filter thing that only lets water pass through from the bucket to the hose. Plus, the nipple itself has metal on it. I believe the rest is plastic (a food grade bucket, and PVC pipe parts).

If I brought a roo to the auction (13 week old BCM/EE mix) how much could I expect to get for him? Just a few dollars? Don't know if it's worth it to bring him to auction or give him away for free ;) I just want him gone very soon; they're all getting expensive now that they eat so much!
Young roos tend to go for just a dollar or three. It's only the big roos that sell for more than 10 bucks or more. It would only be worth bring to the auction if you have a bunch of roos. I have also found that you get more if you box all the bird separately, rather than putting them all together in one box.

So that must have been one heck of a rain storm last night. I woke up a couple of times to lightening. When I went out to check on the girls I was absolutely shocked that the ground on the run was soaking wet. In all the rainstorms we've had since we built it, the ground inside the run has never been wet. I wonder what the girls thought about that...

Thankfully, the feed in the feeder seems to be dry.

Harvey will be our first soup bird. Its kinda sad because he is a nice looking guy but there are too many nice Roosters out there for me to have to tip toe around the run because of an aggressive Rooster. I already have my sights set on 2 new Roos... just cant decide which one!
I'm in the same boat. He's gorgeous but, as you said, there's plenty of nicer roos out there. I also have a bantam (looks like a Sebright) who is going to have to go. The other bantam who also ended up a roo (looks like a Japenese B) is a sweetheart and is much more attentive to the pullets. I would like either a Salmon Faverolles or Brahma roo. From what I've read they tend to be nicer and are gorgeous!

I've heard Brahma roos are sweet, too. And, they are beautiful! My little (not-so-little) Brahma pullet is such a sweetheart.

She's like a happy little puppy, following me around. She's the only one who doesn't give me grief to pick up. When I hold her, she often just snuggles down in my arms and closes her eyes.

Now, if only she wasn't so much Drama...

Hopefully, if you got a Brahma roo, you'd get one with a sense of balance.

We really enjoyed and appreciated all the help with the meat birds that FlyRobin gave us today. We got 16 out of 26 of our birds, plus 4 of Robin's roos done in just about 3 hours. We are opting to let the other of our birds grow another week or two. They are still on the small side, even though they are 8 weeks old now. Here are a few pictures of DH and Robin working.

Timmy wanted to help, but got tired before we got done.

We will be processing the rest of the birds hopefully next Saturday. If any one want to come and see how to butcher, you are more than welcome to stop by this coming Saturday. Even if DH doesn't make it home I think that I will do the deed one way or another.

When I run out of fresh meat for the dog I'm going back to the auction. Sometimes you can get roos for a buck a piece! (bunnies too sometimes) YUP! Our auction in Chehalis charges 10% (I think) OR a flat $10 to set up in the parking lot.

It depends on the time of year, what the weather is like, the buyers - whole ton of stuff. IF you have some nice, purebred boys (of a breed that is rare or particularly wanted), AND have a really pretty print out with pedigree etc, you will do much better.

I just cull my extras and eat them. The gas price alone doesn't make it worthwhile.

I took 6 adult roosters to the auction and got $14
I wouldnt go for 1 unless I lived next door haha

I had a Light Sussex roo that was as sweet as could be. His brother lives with one of my vet techs, and she is always telling how wonderful Carlos is. The only down side for me was that Harold was huge, and I have a rather limited coop and run.

I am having an awful time hatching these chicks. The humidity ran high (30's) the entire time (I dry hatch) so I put a little bit of water in at lock down expecting the humidity to raise high. Well it didn't so I put in more the next day and it got to 80. But for some reason its not holding the humidity in like it has. So I got 6-7 chicks out now I have 5 shrink wrapped chicks and a whole bunch of eggs that have not even piped.
