We're moving back upstairs to the far bedroom! So....it will suck to be a guest in our home, sleeping where we now sleep, but oh well!!

I'm pretty sure that Chicken Little is a roo. I've got a feisty little ~7 yr. old Old English Game bantam hen and her comb is comparable in size to your 2.5 month mystery banty, so I think that it's safe to say it's a cockerel. It's possible that you might have an Old English Game on your hands. If you look at Google images, you can find a few that look fairly similar to your little one. Of course, it could be something completely different. Not 100% sure about Blade, but I'd guess roo. They're both awfully cute (and the rest of your brood too)!

Thanks for your input and your compliments! I'm definitely going to Google the OEG's.

Having had OEGB's I can tell you they are fun little birds with lots of attitude. Mine were NEVER aggressive but they were never tame/calm either. They were wilder than all get out and if not in a covered run they will be gone way up in any trees. Decent producers of tiny eggs.

Do you also think that's what my little guy/girl? is? Chicken Little definitely has attitude when it comes to the other birds. He was more then eager to throw down with my big BSL girl on more then one occasion, naughty boy!
I love him though, he's so cute and runs right up to me. They are hilarious!

Where are you located?  I have a pen of 7 silkies I'm growing out until I can determine who's staying and who's going.  I have a busy couple of weeks in and out of town but after that you and your kids are more than welcome to come visit my silkies.  They hatched on May 13th and are very sweet.

We're in Auburn.  Will you have them still toward the end of August?  Could we come see them then?  We'll be off to Yellowstone for 11 days very soon.

Oh yeah, I'll still have them then. I may need to re-home my beautiful porcelain cockerel before then because DH told me he heard crowing coming from the silkie pen while I was out of town last week, but they stay until they crow.

Since you're in Auburn it shouldn't be too difficult to find a day to get together toward the end of the month. I think your kids will like the silkies. My DD is still trying to figure a way she can bring her lavender silkie, Lucille, back to WSU with her next week. It's very calming to hold a soft silkie in your lap as they coo and sing themselves to sleep.

I've heard people talk about using a red flashlight at night while handling the birds. Why? Will that keep them more calm while I'm clipping wings if I do it at night and use a red bulb flashlight? I know a few of the birds are going to balk like crazy and fight this when I try it.

Birds can't see red. This is why they can't see by the light of the heat lamp. But then there's that whole red light to stop pecking.

This is what I read, and I have to wonder because i swear my rooster wants to attack my red bucket. Is it because there is feed in it?

I spilled red paint in a nestbox, and they don't seem to peck at that. I heard paint pecking is a problem for a lot of folks.

I give all my eggs away. Next year, I am planning on charging eveyone except family, and DH's boss, because his wife sends home cookies to me. Anyway,
How much should I charge for eggs?

I have bantam eggs, Marans eggs, and EE eggs. They will likely be separated dozens. We freerange, but are not organic.

and on an awesome note....my vegan cousin started eating egggs again because I gave his mom a dozen Marans eggs.

Today I am going to try this single induction burner unit thing that showed up. I forgot DH was looking at them, so he can boil water in 45 seconds for macaroni and cheese, when I'm at the craft store. He reported that enameled cast iron worked fine on it. Yay.

Speaking of iron, anyone know a good website for coop flair? An iron rooster, or something like that. Once I saw what I think was a door knocker, that said beware of the chickens.

I know my kids (and myself) would love to see them. I'll get in contact when we get back from Yellowstone.

Does DD live in an apartment or a dorm? Are they small enough to put into a bird cage so if someone came over or questioned she could put it in and say it was just a bird? LOL!

I've heard $2.00/dozen is a common price for back yard flocks. I think small farms might charge more. I'm not sure how bantam eggs would be priced. Legally, I can't sell eggs, but I have a friend who wants to pay us a $2.00/dozen "delivery" fee if we end up with more eggs than we can use.

I wish our vegan niece would start to eat eggs again, but I'm not holding out hope. As long as my 7-year-old son son doesn't go on any more food strikes after listening to her, I guess it doesn't matter what she eats. We're still trying to get that kid to eat meat again (well, eat, period... the kid is a bean pole).

Please let me know what the induction burner is that you are talking about? I would love to be able to get water to boil faster. I hate waiting so long on my lousy stove top.

I don't know about iron decor... but if you are looking for a sign of some sorts, these guys ship fast: http://stores.ebay.com/Gigi-and-Papas-Country-Store?_trksid=p4340.l2563 I ended up buying a red "FRESH EGGS" sign from them to put on my coop and the price was something I could justify to DH. I paid less than $10 - and that included shipping. It dresses up the coop a little bit. I wanted something cute, too - like you are thinking, but everything I have seen so far has been expensive ($30 or more). DH is still trying to come to terms with the cost of the first coop/run for my $2.50 chickens - he's not going to fall for letting me decorate it. When I asked about getting something cute to put on the door he mouthed off with "Then what are you going to do, hang curtains?" I told him I was thinking about it.

That ebay store also has a sign that reads "I dream of a world where a chicken can cross the road without having their motives questioned" that I *almost* bought to hang on my fence, but thought I better not be facetious.
