Well I am taking another step in my bee keeping. I have agreed to supply (a few) hives of bees to a local farm. It will start with removing a colony in a building and taking over the hives that are already there. Hope this works and I am not getting in too deep!

I went over last night to check it out and while looking at the bees I have to remove and bring home I got stung right on top of the ear and behind the same ear.

By the time I got home my ear was sticking out and looked like Dumbo or Pres never mind.

I've heard people talk about using a red flashlight at night while handling the birds. Why? Will that keep them more calm while I'm clipping wings if I do it at night and use a red bulb flashlight? I know a few of the birds are going to balk like crazy and fight this when I try it.

It allows you to see them, but they cannot see you.
Works great for applying Eprinex or Permethrin to their bottoms...just go down the roost & apply whatever medications and they just sit there.

I see signs asking $4 to $5 a dozen, around here, for backyard eggs. (Renton, Kent, Fairwood area) The last time I looked, about 2 years ago, Organic brown eggs at Fred Meyers were $4.87 a dozen.

Mine are priced by 1 doz weights:
Jumbo=1#--14 oz = $4.50
XL= 1# --11 oz = $4.00
Large=1#---8oz = 3.75
Med=1#--5oz = $3.00
Small=18 o z=$2.75 and pee wees
Pee Wee is 15 0z and sells at $2.00
Pee Wees are basically fart eggs.

Wow, it was almost easy to catch up today !
So many out enjoying the sun ???

I am surfing the web looking for more stuff for the house:
Heating systems....one for with power, and a back up for with out power, then a water heater system...in-line or conventional tank ?
We will get a propane tank set, so will have propane for Range cook top and heat system...and in line on demand hot water....

Anyone here have an LPG on demand hot water system please PM me if you like it or not.
I am not sure I want to go there with the high winds we can get out here on the coast...may blow out the flame enough to make life miserable.....that said, electric conventional tank would be the other choice...........what else, oh yes, electrical lights, fixtures gotta pick some out.

All this stuff has to be priced (including any permits & labour) and totalled & sent to the bank for our owner/builder loan to finish up the structure.
Ok back to shopping for me.
We do not have our helpers here again until Saturday to help stand up the last wall .
DH is fixing a passagway framed 3 feet too close to a wall...has to sawzall out a few studs & move the passageway over.
Other than that, it is lookin' good !

What about running extra wiring to the heat source & refrigerator from the generator ? Better than running extension cords through the house in a storm~~~~~~~~~~~~

How is the job market out there?
Any need for an engineer or ecologist? I have degrees in both.

Well all of my birds are doing great. Miss Cluck has healed up nicely (she was pecked at till it left a bald spot on top of her head at the old house) I doubt she will ever grow feathers in the bald spot. hubby says she looks like a friar. All my chickens and ducks adjusted to the move pretty good.

This weekend is 20th reunion YEA!!! so we are spending the weekend on the west side of the state. Either going to the Ren Faire in buckley or else the arts festival in Eatonville. Just haven't made up my mind yet if I want to look at art or dress like a pirate. lol

We are still on the lookout for a speckled sussex roo. I have the ladies just not the gentlemen. Hubby himself likes this breed and is the one wanting to find a roo. If anyone hears of or knows of someone that has speckled sussex roo's to find a home for can you please let me know??? I would appreciate it very much.

Yesterday was super tiring... Went with friend to Centralia and back so she could take her female Japanese Chin dog to meet a male Chin. At the place it seemed like Chins kept coming out of the woodwork I lost count. But they were so cute of a dog too. But man it was a long ride.

We were charging the guys at DH work $2.00 but they all started giving him $2.50 on their own when feed and food prices started going up. We get sell just enough eggs to cover costs.

The dogs get eggs as well so that reduces their food costs and helps pay for the ones not laying yet and the cockerels. I think we about break even.
I love that the birds are enthusiastic foragers.

I charge $4. They cost $6 at the local farmers' market. I live in the city.

I would expect Hanford to be interested in someone with a degree combination like yours. Maybe this site http://www.hanford.gov/page.cfm/DOEHRM will be helpful.

I couldn't sleep the other night and started thinking. I was thinking about entering a Spitzhauben or two into some of the local shows , like Monroe, next year to create interest in the breed and specifically my birds and eggs. Do you think that would work? How would I let people know where they can buy eggs. The cages don't have names on them as far as I can tell.
