Aw man, I totally suck! I clipped the girls' wings yesterday and you know what I realized? Their poop shelf and roosts are way too high now! They can't get enough lift on the way up or down, so they are majorly struggling to get up there, and when they jump down they have no wings to catch them on the way down so they slam into the shavings on the floor. Good thing it's deep litter but my 2 babies look to have injuries to their beaks or combs right by their nostrils, so I think they hit the ground hard. Now I have GOT to figure out a way to lower that shelf TOMORROW before someone gets really hurt :( I hope it's screwed in, not nailed...but I think it's nailed.
I screwed mine in just in case I have to move them. Sorry yours got hurt, hope they are ok.

Gosh how scary Renee. I hope he pulls through!

Have fun, whatever you're doing! Hope it's something relaxing...though with no technology I might kill someone

Good thing I don't leave lights on near our coop...though I probably don't have anything you would want anyway

Question for those with mixed age flocks: What do I feed them if the age discrepancy is a bit too much? Right now, my dozen girls are:
2 - 9 week olds
2 - 16 week olds
1 - 18 week old
7 - 19 week olds

For the oldest 10 I know I could switch to layer rations next time I need feed and just supplement with oyster shell until then, but what about the youngest 2 who are only 9 weeks? Would they be harmed if I bought layer?

Also, pellets or crumble??? What do your birds like best?

Quote: My nephew is getting married Saturday. Since I have not seen him or my sister for over 5 years. I have decided to make the best of it. And it seems that my sister has brought a bunch of pics she has from when we were very young. I am taking my scanner so I can have copies in my computer.
It sounds like the wedding is going to be quite the shin dig. They are expecting 300++. Seems my riggin britches are not acceptable and there is some question about my wranglers being ok. I told them well that is me ya get the logger or the cowboy. That is the best I have. If those don't work I can stay home! The bride (who I have not met) said Wranglers rock so we shall see. Ok gotta get busy loading things so we can get out of here.

And JUST IN CASE anybody has any CRAZY ideas of making a shopping trip!!! My coops are all under the care of a VERY extreme security system. So save yer time and gas don't even waste yer time or gas. While I may (?) have some nice birds. NOTHING in my coops is WORTH YER LIFE ! ! ! !

I looked into pellets vs. crumble once. All I could find was that pellets don't blow away, so some freerange folks use it. We freerange, but they have food in a protected area when it gets bad up here. I have bantams now, and they eat crumble, so I stopped buying pellets. I'm down to my last few scoops. I also feed scratch grains. Mine all prefer grains, then crumble, then pellets.

Quote: I am kind of at that point too. I have different ages right now. I do have one treadle feeder that only the oldest girls know how to use right now. So I can put layer feed in there. If you want to buy just one feed, I would go with a flock raiser or all purpose poultry and put oystershell out free choice for the ones that need the extra calcium. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Edit for spelling and to add that I use crumble but some like pellets. If you switch to pellets I think someone said that you should mix the crumble and pellets and cut back on the crumble gradually until they are eating only pellets. They have to learn to eat them I guess.

My coop is coming along nicely, soon I will post pics. And I want to say thanks to everyone here, I have learned alot and you all are very helpful. I do let the chicks play in the run during the day and they love it. They have really started to get into the whole dust bath thing, it is so cute. :)

Yesterday, we found a baby stick bug. I have only ever seen the bigger ones, It was so cool, my daughter put it in a jar and had to show everyone. She even showed the neighbor kids who then asked if they could come see the chicks. So we all visited for a while, then the kids let the stick bug go so he could be free. :) The neighbors seemed impressed with my coop building abilities, lol. It is turning out so cute.

Another question:
Am I supposed to worm the chicks? If so, what do you use and how often is this done.

Lisa :)
