That's good advice. I look at those nest boxes and think that if I was a hen I would not lay in those. They are not 'safe' looking. Too exposed. Put a 'top' on them and/or install curtins.

HTH,

Fog

The darker and more secluded - the happier your girls will be =)

You could run a strip of 1x1 (or old curtain rod or something straight) down the front-top of the boxes and hang a sheet over the top covering the "roof" and most of the front. I'd think that'd be a super cheap fix to see if they like it better.

DH took a half day off today and we went to the fair. Turns out we just missed the youth poultry show, which starts tomorrow, but there were some geese, ducks and ornamental gamebirds (pheasants) and a couple incubator/brooder displays.

They also had an animals of the world exhibit including a zebra, yaks, and other exotics. This picture of two wallabies is for Justbugged, who wanted her DH to bring her one from Australia!

Cute Call duck for the quackers on the thread:

It's actually pretty easy when there's not very many other choices for food. We don't eat dairy (no milk, yogurt, butter, cheese, etc), gluten (no pasta, bread, cereal, etc), or soy (in EVERYTHING prepackaged). Because of that, we choose to eat a Paleo diet consisting of "clean" meat (meat raised humanely and killed humanely, and fed the way nature intended, lived a happy life before being slaughtered, etc), fruit, nuts, vegetables, seeds. We eat eggs almost every day for breakfast and use eggs almost every other meal as well, especially when baking Paleo things because there's nothing else to hold baked goods together besides egg. Because we don't eat cereal, besides gluten free oatmeal there aren't many options for breakfast but eggs; sometimes I use eggs in my Paleo muffins we have for breakfast once or twice a month. Here's some of our favorite meals that qualify for our diet:
Brussel sprout hash with egg on top: http://www.cooksmarts.com/cs-blog/2012/02/a-pr-campaign-for-brussels-sprouts/
Add 1-2 raw eggs into green smoothies for lunch
Of course, scrambled, poached, over easy eggs for breakfast with bacon, sausage, and/or fruit
Hard boiled eggs with a lunch of sliced veggies (cucumber, tomato, red/orange/yellow bell peppers, broccoli, carrot sticks) with homemade hummus for dipping
Egg salad (served over a bed of greens since we don't have sandwiches), or add hard boiled eggs to your chicken salad

Gosh there's more but I can't think it's been a long day. I'll post more ideas when they come to me. HTH!

Well I came home from dropping off the kids at AWANA and my girls had gone to bed. The newbies were pacing all over the coop and run, making laps trying to figure out where to go. I decided to wait them out and see what they'd do; the Marans finally hopped on the roost and cowered in a corner away from everyone who was yelling at her. The EE was more frantic than ever and tried to jump all over the inside of the run finding a roost because she was blind; it was dark. I grabbed her and brought her into the coop and put her up there with everyone else. Hoping she'll get the picture tomorrow that even though it won't be pleasant for a while she still needs to roost up there and get used to everyone. Pretty good for their first night roosting with their new flock.

Paleo mayonaisse - requires 2 eggs and a cup and a half of a very mild flavored olive oil, along with a couple other ingredients to emulsify it. Very good and no soy oil like store bought!

Dang it girly ya is a picky bratly. How many soon ya lookin fer.

Did I mention that the BCM was either yelling at me (screeching) or purring all day yesterday? She's got a 'tude!
I'm sorry she's having such a hard time adjusting. How about Willow, the blue EE? Any better?

I've picked up 4 older birds over the years. None of them screamed but they all sure seemed nervous.
At least I thought they were nervous. So nervous that two of them quit laying for months.

I hope they settle in soon, for their sake and yours!
