Willow laid her first egg for us today! It's a teensy fart egg but SO bright blue!! Hoping they get bigger with time again.
Yes, I saw your earlier post just hadn't had a chance to respond yet.
It's so interesting to me how different my birds were here with me.
Hopefully, both birds are getting acclimated to your home and you and your family.
I do so love the blue eggs, especially against the dark brown. Pretty!

Ron would itbe possible to put twine criss cross over the run??? I can get lots of hay twine and we could have a knot tying class to put it together. I could come help ya the weekend after Salem show. Just let me know!!
Rob thanks for the offer but the run is just to big to do that. Like I said its about 70ft X 90-100 ft give or take a foot!! I don't really want to keep any babies. I would be more upset if something got one of my big girls. I do have a smaller run inside the big one that I can probably cover. Next year ! LOL

Are there any waterer heaters that don't require electricity?
Bury a bucket of water in compost, or rather deep litter, and the microbes will keep it from freezing.
Friends in Canada do this in their barn.
Down side is some critters fall in (goats & horses) and some kick poop in the water (chookies) and I will not even mention what the ducks do to it...LOL

So I went out to the barn to look at my thermo cube to see if it would work outside. It will NOT fit vertically. There was a Hawk inside my run and it had one of my babies. When it saw me it dropped the baby and flew up into a tree. It was pretty small. lot smaller then my hens. Where was my rooster????? UNDER the barn. He's out of here next week!!!! the baby was dead. so I have lost two babies in a week. I can't cover my run it is something like 70 ft. X 100 ft
Then block off half the run & gate it.
So when you are home you can open the gate & let the flock in the remaining uncovered section.
When you are gone, keep them in the covered section.
I have a few 50 X 100 foot nets...they exist.
bad part is SNOW.

Yeah I was just hoping there was something that might work like my ice cream scoop. There's a chemical inside it, and the scoop is made of nickel I think??? so it melts through ice cream immediately, no muscle needed. I was hoping there was something I could drop in the waterer that would regulate the temp like that.

That sounds interesting, don't you have to soak the scoop iin hot water first to make it hot ?

And how is DH ??

That does work...hawks, eagles & ground predators are very afraid of getting caught.
Also if ya put twine back & forth, maybe hang some old CDs to reflect light ?
And please do not blame the rooster, he ain't stooooopid.

I'm testing that passive heat technique right now. I have 2 bricks warming in plastic bags in the greenhouse. I'm curious to see if they'll be warm in the morning.
Especially in january at 20 degrees, the green house covered in snow.

Yup, it is toasty warm in there all right !!! No sun either.........
