I have 3 different sizes. The waterers are made from the small icing buckets net weight on the label says 14Lbs and 2 gallons is about half full. My feeders are made from the 15lb rectangle buckets. I store my food in the largest ones and they say 28Lb on the label. I had to put air holes in the waterers lids because the seal was so air tight that the water would not come out of the nipples! Here are some pics for y'all.

Here is one waterer, I put 4 nipples in these.

Here is the feeder. All the buckets are hung from the roof frame of the coop so I put wood blocks under
the feeder to keep it from swinging, and tipping since they seem to like to climb in it! If the holes where
smaller it would probably be better, but I was worried about the boys hurting their combs. I also made
sure to smooth the edges with my utility knife.

Here are the big ones. I can fit almost all of a 50Lb bag of food in 2 of them.
The lids seal VERY well.

Hope this helps.
Maybe we could get the old woman in the garden shed

(CL) to show her awesome "bucket feeders"!!!

Sorry I missed the meet up today.... so many things to get done this month!

for the splay legs... I made hobbles.
Take one of these...
700

Tie a knot on each end to make a loop....
so you end up with a small loop in each end and a section in between....
So it looks something like this.... (I don't have photos so all is pulled f\rom internet and just examples)
700

You then take the chick and slip the feet into the end loops to hobble.

The chick will have problems walking at first and will fall down and be pathetic.... DO NOT GIVE IN!Z stay strong and keep the hobbles on for at least 3-5 days.
if the chick looks like it is walking fine leave the hobbles on for a couple more days then remove.... watch carefully and if they start to spread the feet again hobble again asap!
I had 1 hen that was a complete splay leg.... (I did not breed her) She was hobbled for 3 weeks as a chick before things started working right again. She is now one of the tough buggers that lives in alaska :D

Books can teach you a lot and books can lead you astray....
Common sense is more of what is needed when raising animals.
I know people who have all the book knowledge in the world and I would never ever let them care for a animal.....
I also know some who have not read a thing about animals yet they "know" what is needed and I would let them care for my animals anytime....

Just be aware that even if they do not use the right words, or feed what you think they need to be fed does not mean that they are not caring for their animals.
Feeding scratch might be the best thing if they free range with a large amount of bugs to eat. I know my friends in Samoa and in Alaska can not afford shipped in grains so they have to use what they have locally and to someone here in the PNW that would seem like a crazy diet. Yet their birds are healthy, fat and laying great.

I am still interested. I followed the link and noticed that the photo shows a sticker attached to the carton.
Do they have plain ones?
I'd just as soon use my own label.
Labels or no labels, I wouldn't want more than 20-25. Whatever works for the group, works for me.
Thanks for pulling the order together and thanks, FlyRobinFly for offering your free shipping code.
They have plain ones, I just buy the labeled ones because I don't have a color printer to make nice ones with.
Renee, I will PM you with the code.

Well, I'm off to pick my kids up then, hopefully, to a fish tank warehouse in Fife. Thanks Greg!

Fingers crossed I'll find a pump for a 20 gallon tank.

wow..wish I could go!

Me too! I would like to find a tank to use as a brooder in the future. Sadly, DH would probably get rid of anyting I bring home, he's in PURGE MODE lately and it's driving me nuts. I keep having to dig out perfectly usable stuff (things we still use!) from the trash can.

I'm not in dire need of roofing materials, we have a bunch of metal roofing panels laying around from the previous owner I can use if I silicone the holes. The big coop has a metal roof already as I just built it into an awning.

UE had posted about alternative roofing materials and I mentioned I'd love to make a soda can roof. I thank everyone for offering up materials, though. It's such a great group here that is always willing to help.

I have a couple dog houses I bought for chicken housing that the roofs leak on. I still may save up some cans to roof one. DH takes the tall cans of tea to work. One a day. I can see about getting him to bring them home to me instead of tossing in the recycle there. I thought about that some more this morning and think taking the ends off, then cutting them in half lengthwise on both sides would be best. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the ends. Seems like the bottom should work for something. I'm going to test how well paint sticks to them as well. I'm thinking they would make a very pretty roof. Reusing is always better than recycle.
