I cannot believe how many people are giving away their roosters and hens. This weekend alone I'm getting 12 chickens and 1 duck just given to me. Today I had someone give me 2 hens. Why get the birds to begin with. I'm very grateful though. I'm just getting overloaded. I can't say no!!!!!

so I'm checking around to see if it would be possibly to hand-carry fertile eggs onto the airplane ..

I don't think they will let you carry eggs onto the plane. I would think they would be considered a "liquid" and they are not allowed past the security check point....

actually, liquids are allowed IF they are 3 ounces or less per "container" and if all containers fit into a standard quart size ziplock bag

have been throught THAT rigamarole a number of times, most recently three weeks ago

however, the airlines have different rules for "animals" ... and the FAA gal said she thought the TSA would treat these as living things, not as liquid chemicals

her opinion, and I'm still waiting for the "official word" from TSA, was that the eggs could be scrutinized to assure that they had no breaks in the shell, and they could be "candled" to assure that there was nothing odd in them

also, your own personal food is now allowed on airliners, and liquids are allowed IF they are bought after passing through the security checks

of course I would also get a USDA inspection of these, and have them affix the appropriate inspection stamps

Would you have to enclose each individual egg in it's own little baggie?????

I just flew down to Vegas last weekend to get my dad from a hospital and I forgot to remove a pop I was drinking from my carry on. They threw it away.

I think it's weird that you cannot bring a sealed soda pop through security, but you can buy one on the other side and take it.... What's to say there is not some kind of poison or whatever in that one?

nope, if TSA were considering eggs as "liquid/gel in containers", all the eggs would have to fit in ONE ziplock

or --- in two, if you have a companion along --- LOL -- I usually have more personal care items than will fit in one ziplock, so hubby lets me use the extra space in his ...

I figure you could probably get 4 or 5 eggs per quart ... which would be enough to get a flock started, eventually

the TSA regulations are not necessarily logical (ask Mr. Spock ! ) but if you want to travel by air, you have to play the game by their rules (the vendors selling food and drink inside the airport, have obviously influenced these rules)

Hi everyone. I am from Kelso and this is my first day on this site. Gotta tell you I love it! I raised chickens when I was a kid, now just got 5 Americauna chicks. We also have dogs--a black lab mix, a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a "I want to eat the chicks" mini dacshund. Can't wait to get the garden in!

Kennewick Chick Auction

Where? And what sort of people sell here? Any chance of finding some show quality chicks there?

It is hosted by a 4-H club, I forget which one. It is at the fairgrounds, we went last year and they had maybe 200 chicks and some waterfowl. The chicks they get are mostly from Duane Urch, he is a show breeder, one of the 'mystery chicks' we got that no one knew what it was turned out to be a black leghorn, and she won at our fair. I would suggest going, the chicks sell for pretty cheap, and its nice knowing that you are supporting a 4-H club. If you want to make a trip to Spokane on April 26, our 4-H club is having a chick sale, we will for sre have 200 chicks and 50 ducklings that our club has ordered. We are also expecting many chicks and ducklings from some great breeders, like Phil Bartz, he is a judge and has some rare breeds that he will be donating chicks from. We will also have some adult birds like a quad of welsummers from last year, some wyandotte bantams, maybe some ducks, and who knows what else. We will also be having silent auctions and door prizes, we have many great chicken things donated, and a walmart gift card

Denna, I have been meaning to email you to tell you that we have moved the sale to Northwest seed and pet. We decided that Aslin Finch was too small, and last years sale at Northwest seed and pet was great last year. It is still starting at the same time. If you want you can just bring them the morning of the sale, we will have temporary brooders set up. I am so excited for the sale, I forgot to mention, we will also have seminars on feed, breeds, chick care, and showing. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me.
