This is awful....I am so sorry. Make sure to keep us updated. You and your family are in my prayers.

We havn't heard anything new yet.
But my younger cousin "his sister" is here with us. She's out riding the pony. Figured I would give her something fun to do, in the hopes of getting her brother off her mind. I remember being her age and watching my brother being carted off to the ER from riding off a 50 foot cliff. "Rain had washed the trail out the night before..." I remember being freaked out and stressed, so I can understand how she is feeling.

Cheryl - I am so sorry! Prayers heading your way.

KM and redroosterfarm - Thanks for the advice about winterizing the coop. I am hoping for not too much snow, and they are sheltered from the wind, as long as we don't get another one of those huge windstorms plowing through here. They will be about 6 weeks when we put them out in October, providing they are fully feathered. I can keep them in longer if not. But it's getting very crowded in here with 4 chicks and 4 ducklings. Moving them into a bigger brooder tomorrow. And supposed to be in the 70's for the next 3 days, so I can get them outside!

Thanks again for your help

We finally found the hornet's nest. We had to actually dig the dirt out from under the wall of the hen-house. The nest (had to be a few years old) was very-very large. Sprayed and pulled out, sprayed and pulled out. I think we finally got it. There had to be hundreds of hornets.

As long as you keep the heat lamp you are using on and available until they are a little older they should Ok. If you can keep them in the brooder until 8 wks that woud even be better. And then still have the heat lamp on at night for a few more weeks. I wouldn't worry too much unless if freezes after that. Once they hit 10- 12 weeks they should be fine unless temps get REALLY low.

Rare Feather's Farm: I was up in your neck of the woods this evening. We went up to Leader Lake and went fishing. Got totally skunked and caught nuttin' (nothing). We could not stay until later evening as I had kid things to get ready for the next morning...but I have not been up to leader Lake in a long time. It sure was fun and nice and quiet. No kids wanted to come, so we had a nice quiet evening having grown-up time.

On another note: We went to the Okanogan County Fair...not many chickens, but they did have a few. I have a little Cochin hen. They had a few Cochins, but some of them were huge. So are Cochins large or small? There were 2 buff colored hens and a buff rooster...they were really pretty, but they were bigger than my BR girls. Are there different sizes (please remember that I am fairly new to the whole breed of chickens thing - be gentle on me).

Also, there was a BIG gray colored rooster with a big poofy body and butt that almost looked like a Cochin but they called it something that (I think) started with an O. He was so pretty....He looked like he had eye liner on. Any ideas for me? There were they tiny little roosters and hens too, they were cute....but it would take 2 dozen of their eggs for me to be able to make an omelet. Don't remember what they are called either....

It was fun at the fair though.

I'm baaaack!!!!!! We had an AWESOME end of season trip to the dunes. Weather was perfect, good friends and lots of good food ( did I mention I was the cook for 16 people). And I won the driving award due to my improvements from last time.
