flyingmonkeypoop, I just realized you're not too far from my folks. (Relatively speaking...) They live in the Diamond Lake area. We got half our flock from them. They're wanting to get Ameraucanas soon, and I'm thinking about getting them a pair of guineas for their garden. They've got so many grasshoppers!

I know what you mean about temptation, it's ridiculous! I just put 40 eggs in the bator (Buff Orps, Cuckoo Marans, Welsummers and Black Australorps). Not to mention this month alone I've ordered 75 chicks from the hatchery. Someone please tell me why I waited until the cold weather to do all of this.

It will be great to finally have some dark chocolate egg layers though.

Selena, I am not sure, you might email her to check, I know this variety is not a real common variety, especially over here.

I have a pair of gray's will be trying to hatch every egg they lay next year, hoping she will go broody herself and hatch herself. I need to get more for my own flock so I am not sure how many I might have available, I like to see how they are growing out etc. I show so I have to pick and choose carefully what I want to keep working with and what I dont. Currently I have my Gray, Blue Fawn and Pastels in the same pen. I can get all 3 varieties of babies with this set up. I am excited! I will let you know when I have something available or if someone else I know has any grays available.

- NurseELB - Yeay! Hope to see you there, last year this one got flooded out and canceled so hopefully everything will be ok this year. I cant wait!

Selena thats pretty cool. The grasshoppers are always really bad over here but the birds love them. Its always fun watching them go in little groups and flush out the grasshoppers then go running after them.

I was pretty happy, there was an ad on CL for gray calls for $15 so I called and we went over there that night. They had 3 females and 5 males so I got a female and she is so cute and typey. I noticed when I put her in the pen with the other grays that she is much lighter and her brown is more red. Now I have 2 boys and 3 girls.

I saw that ad too! We were planning on going over there for Thanksgiving, but my M-i-L dropped some hints the other day that since the other kids are visiting family in Cali, if we go to visit my folks, "what's the point in me doing Thanksgiving if no one is here?" (insert sigh and a quick trip on the Guilt Train.) Besides, work is so busy for DH... So, we're planning on Christmas instead. That got me thinking all kinds of thoughts! "Maybe I can get those ducks now and have them stay at Ma n Pa's..... WAIT! Maybe I can get Ma n Pa 2 pairs and then get their ducklings next spring!..... OOh! Look! Guineas, they'll protect their yard!" Well, at least they'll alert them when a porcupine is in the fruit trees again...

After all, we DID take 14 birds off of them this summer... they can handle a few ducks and guineas, right?

LOL, you can try my method. I found out that DH liked his B-i-L's turkey tom and told DH I'll get him one. I also let him build me new mini-coops that'll look like the 3 Little Pigs houses.. all I wanted was some simple tractors, but give a carpenter any reason to wield a hammer....

Kinda like kids... if you get them involved, they'll think it's the bomb.

(that, and like any true addict... you must spread the addiction!)

Then again, I haven't told him about the quail... and I'm not sure he realizes I still want ducks...

My other thing is being on equal par... He's got his Traaxes (or whatever it is) and his other really impressive build-it-yourself RC car... the least I could have is some poultry that will provide us with eggs and fertilize and keep down the bugs! *bats eyelashes*

hi y'all! i found this thread (duh, how long did it take me???) not too long ago and have been a bit of a lurker... so! HI!
frow.gif

just throwing this out to see what the response might be (but not at all sure what the heck i'm gonna do this spring - i'm seriously bitten by the addiction but am contemplating rehoming one of my peeps right now and that's got me melancholy......): IF i get any new peeps in the spring, one of the options i'm considering is a small batch of straight run chicks, buff/bbs/white orps. anyone out there think they might be interested in either going in on a group and/or interested in some extra pullets or cockerels once they're of a reasonably-sexed age? not sure where i'd get blues... might have to see if i could get someone to hatch some eggs for me. for buffs i'm thinking hinkjc's peeps...........

let me know whatcha think!
