Hello from Whidbey Island! It snowed all day Thursday but I had luckily had the sense to call in to work that I wasn't coming. I work in Seattle and just couldn't imagine being out on the highway that long.
It looks like we got about 4- 5 inches all told. Beautiful!!! I could do without the girl's water freezing almost as fast as I can change it, but otherwise am enjoying this rare white wonderland outside.
I have bird netting over my run to keep the girls from escaping and being eaten by any of the many predators we have here (coyotes, raccoons, hawks, eagles, dogs...) and the first snow caved it in. I got out right away the next morning and cleared the snow off so I could tie it all back together again. My little Sebright made the most of the hole and flew out while I was fixing it, but once she landed, she just sat there in the snow. It was up to her neck and I don't think she knew quite what to do. She didn't protest at all when I came and picked her up and put her back inside. Funny girl.
I'm so glad I fixed the netting! I came home early yesterday and found a BIG hawk perched on the top rail of their run, trying to find a hole so he could swoop in and carry off one of my girls.
I know they need to eat too, but sheesh, there's a million rats tunneling in and out of that run. I do wish they'd help me out and eat THEM instead of trying to get my chickens!
Here's the snowy run and coop:
