To all those that have lost chickens.....

It's always hard to lose a loved one, even if that loved one was a feathered friend. I know when I lost a chick in my first batch I was upset and they had only been here a few hours.

I am sorry for your loss. How old?

She was about 10 months old. Thanks for asking.

He found out last night that I'm getting him a BR chick for his bday. Next thing I knew, he was researching names. He called Dumpling "Dump Truck" b/c she ate so darn much. I suggested (Bull) "Dozer" for the new chick and he likes it a lot.

As sad as it is to lose them - and it is so sad when you've got a teensy flock b/c you know every bird personally - there are many, many more chooks to love and welcome into our hearts.

But you went on and look how many you have now - 16! Plus all the other animals. How much land do you have? Are any more a pet than part of the flock?

My youngest son so wanted a pet (can't have dogs/cats due to allergies) and he claimed one of the RIR's and named it fluffy. He looked so happy with it but he was quite affected at the loss of Gert and is hanging back some now. I hope he springs back.

Thanks,
V

I understand. We now have to decide if we want to bring home any more (originally we had planned on have more of other breeds) or just go with these we have for now. Not usre how many heartstrings my sensitive boys can pull!

Oh, how wonderfully sweet of you!
Can you tell us about the Marans personality? We haven't been able to find much about that. Lots of info on the beautiful brown eggs they lay but not much about their personality. One person told me they are their least friendly.

We looked at your pages. My dh didn't know there were that many beautiful pheasants or that you could raise them. Your aviary is impressive! We would love to see it sometime if you are open to that.

I've got more than 16 now. Lets see...12 outside, 8 in the dining room, 8 in the living room, 9 ducks in the computer/dog room, 2 geese in the computer/dog room, 4 turkeys in the dining room, 3 large breed dogs, 1 indoor cat, outdoor cats, lots of fish, 3 rabbits, and 2 kids. Oh can't forget my boyfriend. Not to mention that I'm picking up 2 chickens on the 10th and possibly another next week.

I hope he springs back too.

I went to Del's yesterday so we could pick up corn...they had tubs and tubs and more tubs of chicks...I picked up the baby ameracaunas and said to hubby..."Look at those poofy cheeks" He got this "Don't do this to me look.." He says, you're cute...haha...let's go....I"m like "oooh man...." so I said to him, "you know...I could hatch out my own...leave my EE eggs in the nesting area and not collect them" He gives me the look...."You don't play nice" he says...needless to say, we didn't get the chicks but I am gonna leave my EE eggs in thee...and he knows I will.

There's a few things I don't like about Del's, 1)that you HAVE to buy a min of 6 chicks, 2) they don't have nearly as many as Monroe Farm and Feed by the fair grounds, 3) they don't seem to like answering lots of questions from a new chicken owner and 4) when you order chicks from them you have to get 25, I'd rather have them sent to my home from the hatchery to save a little money.

With Monroe Farm and Feed, 1) you can buy only what you want, be it 1 chick or hundreds, 2) the past 3 weeks they've been getting in over 1,000 chicks, many times over 10 different breeds and even water fowl, 3) they answered all my questions without making me feel stupid or like I was bothering them, and 4) if I want only a few of a breed they will order at anytime during the year, they put a special order in for me.

So now because of the customer service I've gotten at Monroe Farm and Feed and the service I've gotten at Dels, I only go to Monroe Farm and Feed.

Just thought I'd check in here. Still no poultry yet, its getting harder and harder to resist though. I walk to the library every day and I see 4 flocks of chickens within 2 miles. There is a flock across the street, one a couple blocks away, then one across from them, then one right by the library. I have been trying to get a job at the feed store and when I go in my ears are like magnents. I hear the chicks and find them and stare and them. I think I am going to get 'just one'

haha.
I never thought kicking the chick addiction would be so hard, I have been away from my own chickens for about two months now and I am needing cute fuzzies of my own.

We were at Monroe Farm and Feed on Thursday, and came home with 6 little banties, 3 frizzles and 3 English Game. We lost one the next morning though. My mistake letting one of my DD's pick it out without me "helping". It seemed weaker than the others as soon as we got home.

We are now up to 36 chickens. I think it's time to simplify my signature line to just that! We were also supposed to start the new coop this weekend, but the weather is not cooperating again! I have (13) 7-8 week old chicks in the basement, and they need to move outside asap!!! Luckily spring break starts next weekend and my DH took the week off, so we'll be under construction by then rain or shine (or dare I say it....snow!).

Does anyone know if Dels or Monroe Farm & Feed offers a discount for bulk buying layer feed and what it might be? I feel like I'm constantly running up to buy more, and meant to ask last time I was out, but thought maybe someone here would know. I read a thread on here last week where someone mentioned they got a bulk discount if they bought 10 bags or more at a time but it was a different state.
