Nyrial may have a flock to rehome.

Negatory, they're spoken for. I'd be loathe to split up the babies at this young age, and if I gave up two of the three mature females, that would leave one poor female for 3 boys.

I wish I could help. Just a quick FYI though. Even if you find him some girls he may not want them. I had to rehome a Muscovy drake that was sure he was a chicken. He was a big boy and when he could get to them would trap the hens and fight with my roos over their harem. I got him as a companion for my lone female, but he completly ignored her and went for the chickens.

I have very minimal duck experience so maybe Nyrial or another person more knowlegable about ducks could tell you if that is very common or not.

DH found a white egg today!!

I know it's Angel, seeing as I only have 2 white egg layers, and she's the one doing the serious squatting.
Am I the only one that gets a kick out of screwing with my chickens' heads by passing my hand over their head so they squat, and then laugh at them?

Anna, Have you gotten them to squate, then rubbed their backs? You can do it kind of rough. Then when you are done they walk off and shake out their feathers. It's really funny.

You are only getting part of the entertainment! Try it next time you are out there. They arch their back, tail up, and everything!

Got the place rented tonight. They have a coffee maker, we have to bring coffee. They have tables, chairs, microwave, no utensils, no table cloths(if we want them, we bring them). I will be there at 12:15 on the 28th, we have it rented from 12:30 to 5:30. I will get plastic utensils, napkins, and some serving utensils. But plan on bringing a serving spoon or spatula with your food if it needs one.

Weaveagarden, are you up for maybe bringing your home roasted coffee?

I think it would be a good idea to get juice boxes for the kids, and they would have to drink them in the kitchen and dining area. They don't want fruit juices on the dance floor because it stains and takes the finish off the floor. So I thinkg we can set all the food up in the kitchen area and then set tables up in the dining area and in the hall area. Should work fine. Parking should be fine, there is a parking lot and there should be parking on the street.

Hey Mike, the netting on your run, what is it? Is it expensive?

You can just keep looking on craigslist. Most people are trying to get rid of drakes, but I occasionally see people trying to get rid of flocks. Ducks will try to mate with anything... they are... they are that way

this add has runner females for $20 http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/grd/1537788647.html

this
add has them for $20 as well not sure what they are... Cambells or Cambell crosses maybe? http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/grd/1536327253.html

here's
a female for $15 a magpie or something? http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/grd/1535890022.html

Your
drake may or may not take to his new female, especially if he's already had a taste of chicken. Maybe if you get female you can separate the two for a bit so he knows she's the one... better to get a few females btw than just one. Drakes are quite the horny beasts... a lot like roosters, but more so, I think.

So it looks like I'm not the only one who has seen a goose mount a duck. Now for the obvious question... Has anyone ever tried to hatch such eggs?

God Bless,

Can't happen.

Are you sure? Because supposedly chickens have crossed with guineas or something. I saw it several months ago and thought it was really weird. Anyways, both ducks and geese I would guess are fairly close genetically. Not trying to be stubborn or question your experience or anything. Just curious.

God Bless,

Yes, it is very expensive.
It is purse seine netting off a commercial fishing vessel.
Very heavy duty and can stand up to the elements.

God Bless,

All domestic ducks other than the muscovy are derived from the mallard. Those two ducks (mallard/muscovy) can mate and have offspring, but the offspring will be mules, i.e infertile.

Ducks and geese on the other hand are genetically further apart than the mallard and muscovy, sorta like us and chimps. Ducks and geese will do the deed, and the female of the coupling will lay eggs but only because that's what females do. The eggs won't be fertile.

The only reason I know about this is because it's asked all the time in the duck forum.

I am happy to bring the coffee. I will roast it a medium to city roast. Not too smoky. I hope everyone will be OK with that. I use a Nicauraguan blend and it has a nice aroma and very little bitterness, and most people like it. I would also like to sell it sometime in the future to only my bestest friends (Not interested in going commercial if you catch my drift). So if anybody decides they especially like it, I would be happy to supply you with some in the future.

It is really psssssssing down today! The chickens think I am responsible for the weather and keep yelling at me when I walk by the coop.
Note to self: Chickens want a backyard sized covered area. When you have the time. Sure, I will get right on that. Why not heat it while I am at it.
