Didn't someone in this thread about 2000 posts ago say:

"People in Washington are odd."

I don't think that was ever disproven.

Russ- I'm getting excited about the meet & greet

Okay so I rarely ever post here despite the fact that I do live in WA (I think it is the fact that everyone here are central WA city people

) But I finally went into the "city" (well, Port Orchard. . . ) and got myself some blue Ameraucana chicks!! They are just soooo darn cute!

Anyway, kinda wondering if the lady I'm getting my BC Marans from chats here or not. She lives in Gig Harbor though, so. . . Some doubt. Anyway, dropping through to say hi.

Well finaly got access to a camera to get pics of the "new" banty set up so will post a couple as requested.

Here is the little shed turned coop that I got off CL and the dog kennel I had. When the weather dries the coop will be painted barn red and trimmed in white.

Here is the "tunnel". It is a wood ramp surrounded in 1x2 welded wire. 12"W x16" H.

What an interesting group of chickens. Somewhat comical to see how different they are. They are gonna be great pals for each other. Looks like your gonna have a great coop set up when the weather permits you to finish with your plans.

Ron, I love you chickens! Wait... I didn't say that. MUST NOT WANT CHICKENS.... MUST NOT WANT CHICKENS...

Mikeb, being a quack addict really is the way to go.

Don't let these fools talk you out of what could be true happiness.

Welcome aboard,
What species of chicken were you thinking about getting?
You see alot of people who get started for the first time buy there chicks, oh from a friend or a farm store you know purchase.
What I recommend is that you hatch your own. That's right get an incubator get some hatching (fertile) eggs and in 21 days, CHICKS.
This way you will have a bond with your birds, just like the rest of us that hatch. It's a real special experience. Not free either, but worth it!!!

Welcome,
Michael Humphreys

Debra Hartshorn, found her on Craigslist. There are SO many false Ameraucana postings there, she was the first and only I've ever seen on Craigslist. So, I snatched up the last 8 chicks of hers. She still sells hatching eggs I believe. The person in Gig Harbor is Lyn Apodaca. They're Bev-Jeanne cross lines, like most Puget-Sound Marans are. I actually found someone with pure Bev Davis Blue Wheatens, though - That I'm dying to try out, but my incubator is in use right now.

btw - Here's the blue Am chicks I got yesterday - Link - They are all healthy but one who has a weird fit, but otherwise I am very pleased! One in particular I will certainly use for further breeding.

And hi, Weaveagarden!

Welcome Mikeyb, and be careful we started off with 5 chicks and by the end of the week we had 10, than the next year we had more it just keeps growing. Like I say with the goats its like eating potato chips you cant just have one....

You guys are funny!!!! I mean that in the nicest way...
My back yard is approx one acre. Plenty of room to have some chickens. The question is which ones..I've kinda narrowed my choices down to three.
R R; BR; and leghorns.
Here's a problem for you all. (I'm dithering over this so much it's making my head hurt) I have a shed that is 12 x 8 and 7' inside. However there are several problems with converting it to a coop. First, the roof is in truss form, would the chickens try to roost that high and on 1 x 4's?. It's location is very bad but I can drag it to another location with a southern exposure. The biggest problem is that it is just texture 1-11 on 2 x 4 studs. There is no vapor barrier. There is a sliding window on one end.
I would rather have a brand new shed (a little larger) but that would mean more $$$$.
So I could move and remodel my current shed to house the chickens and build a new shed or I could just build a new chicken coop in the designated spot.
Since I'm retired I have time on my hands but not a lot of $$$$. Either way, the cost will come out about the same, a few sheckles more if I just build a new shed, etc.
Suggestions, hints, etc....Mikey
